Tampa, FL (Sports Network) – Mike Richards tallied twice as the Philadelphia Flyers halted a four-game losing streak by downing Tampa Bay, 5-2, at St. Pete Times Forum.

Blair Betts recorded his first career two-goal game while Simon Gagne added a goal and one assist for the Flyers, who kicked off a six-game road trip by winning for just the third time in 14 contests.

Michael Leighton, in his first start since November 30, picked up the win with a 31-save performance.

Zenon Konopka and Victor Hedman scored for the Lightning, who had won two straight games. Mike Smith yielded four goals on 35 shots in the setback.

Oskars Bartulis took a shot from the high slot which deflected off Betts to give the Flyers a 3-2 edge with 9:59 left in regulation, and Richards finished off a 2-on-1 break for a two-goal visitors’ edge with less than three minutes to play.

Gagne put the clincher into an empty net with 34 seconds remaining.

“We let ourselves down in the second period,” Betts acknowledged. “We weren’t keeping the game simple enough and making the most of our opportunities but that all turned around in the third.”

The Flyers took a 1-0 lead one second less than four minutes in, as Bolts defenseman Andrej Meszaros accidentally redirected a Betts rebound try into his own net.

It was 2-0 on a Philly power play at 9:34 when Richards was alone at the side of the net to tap in a Gagne feed.

Tampa Bay failed to convert during a lengthy 5-on-3 early in the second period, but halved its deficit at 5:58 on a rebound score from Konopka.

Hedman tied the game with 7:58 left in the period on his top-shelf slap shot from the left circle.

“I’m sure guys were tired, especially after that road trip,” said Lightning forward Steven Stamkos of his club’s flagging energy after the second period burst. “Pretty much going with three lines, some of us were struggling, but you have to leave everything out there.”

Game Notes

Leighton was picked up off waivers from Carolina last week, and made his first start with Philly since February 24, 2007. He also picked up his first win in a Flyer uniform since February 12, 2007, a 6-1 thrashing of Detroit…Flyers forward Darroll Powe returned after a 16-game absence due to a strained shoulder…Bartulis, Ian Laperriere and Claude Giroux all picked up two helpers for Philadelphia.

Game Wrapup

Philadelphia Flyers 3, New Jersey Devils 2

Philadelphia, PA (Sports Network) – James van Riemsdyk netted the winning goal midway through the third period, as the Philadelphia Flyers denied the New Jersey Devils a share of the NHL record books with a 3-2 victory at Wachovia Center.

Darroll Powe and Scott Hartnell also tallied for the Flyers, who have won six of their last seven games.

Claude Giroux had a pair of assists and Ray Emery allowed two goals on 35 shots for his 11th win of the season.

“Obviously, they were looking to do something pretty special and for us it was just another warning that they were going to be ready to play and play as hard as they can,” Flyers head coach John Stevens said of the streaking Devils.

David Clarkson and Zach Parise scored for the Devils, who had won their first nine games of the season on the road, and were bidding to tie the league mark of 10 straight away from home set by Buffalo to kick off the 2006-07 campaign.

Martin Brodeur yielded three goals on 35 shots in defeat for New Jersey, which also saw its eight-game win streak snapped.

Van Riemsdyk notched an insurance goal with 9:22 left in regulation on a quick wrister in the slot after stripping Bryce Salvador, and the Devils were not able to respond until Parise’s score in a goalmouth scramble with less than a second to play.

“Yeah definitely a time or two thinking about that,” said van Riemsdyk, a New Jersey native about scoring on Brodeur. “Playing in the driveway with my brothers, you always kind of relive scoring goals against guys like that. So it’s pretty goal to get one like that.”

Powe wrecked any chance of Brodeur tying Terry Sawchuk’s career shutout record by converting a Giroux pass from the slot 7:11 into the first period.

Hartnell doubled the advantage on a power play 44 seconds into the second period, scoring as his backhanded centering pass hit a Devils defenseman’s skate in the crease and slid by Brodeur.

A 5-on-3 advantage produced the Devils’ first goal, a Parise to Clarkson connection with 4:18 left in the second but the visitors didn’t capitalize on the one-man advantage.

Game Notes

The Flyers improved to 11-2-1 in games where they have scored first…Powe’s goal was his sixth of the season in 17 games, tying his career-high set in 60 games last year…Prior to the contest, the Flyers inducted former pugilist Dave Schultz into their Hall of Fame. Schultz played from 1972-76 in Philadelphia, winning two Stanley Cups (1974-75), and set the NHL single- season record for penalty minutes in one season with 472 in 1975. He totaled 51 goals, 115 points and 1,386 PIMs over 297 games with the franchise.

Philadelphia, PA (Sports Network) – Ray Emery’s first start against his former team was an uneventful affair, as he stopped 22 shots to lead Philadelphia past Ottawa, 5-1, at Wachovia Center.

“There was more urgency to win for Ray,” said Flyers head coach John Stevens. “It was just another game for him, I didn’t see any anxiety before the game or anything to tell me he was less than focused.”

Emery played with the Sens from 2002-08 and backstopped the club to a 2007 Stanley Cup Finals appearance before being released from his contract following the 2007-08 season. The 27-year-old spent last season in Russia after no NHL club offered him a deal.

In Danny Briere’s first game back from a four-game absence with a quad muscle injury, he notched a pair of goals for the Flyers, who have won five consecutive games. Blair Betts, James van Riemsdyk and Darroll Powe also scored for the victors.

Mike Fisher provided the lone tally for the Senators, who have lost four of six. Pascal Leclaire was battered for five goals on 27 shots in the loss.

“They pressured us hard the whole night,” said Senators head coach Cory Clouston. “The two goals in the second was a little bit deflating. The third one and the goals at the end didn’t help either.”

Briere batted a rebound out of the air from the low slot just prior to the seven-minute mark of the third period, and the Flyers moved in front, 3-1.

Powe added extra insurance with just over eight minutes remaining, and Briere ripped home his second of the contest under two minutes later to provide the final four-goal margin.

“Yes, a little bit. These are fun ones to play,” said Emery if he was keyed up to face his former team. “Nerves are definitely going. It’s a little personal story for myself to come out ahead.”

Betts’ short-side score on a Flyers power play 9:34 into the second broke a scoreless tie, but Fisher’s backhander on a Sens advantage knotted the game with 5:01 to play.

Van Riemsdyk’s one-timer off a cross-ice dish from Jeff Carter put Philly back ahead 1:24 later on another man advantage, and the Flyers protected the one- goal lead to intermission.
Game Notes

Emery finished his Ottawa career with a 71-40-14 record and eight shutouts in 134 appearances…Ottawa had won three of four meetings last season…Flyers defenseman Oskars Bartulis skated in his first NHL game…Betts tallied his first goal of the season and first since the final game of last season, when he was with the New York Rangers in a game against Philadelphia…Carter, Kimmo Timonen and Chris Pronger all had two assists for the Flyers.

Buffalo, NY (Sports Network) – Ray Emery made 28 saves to help the Philadelphia Flyers take a 5-2 win over the Buffalo Sabres at HSBC Arena.

Daniel Carcillo scored twice while Chris Pronger had a goal and an assist for the Flyers, who have won three straight. James van Riemsdyk and Darroll Powe each lit the lamp in the game.

Derek Roy had a goal and an assist while Tyler Myers also had a goal for the Sabres, who had won five of six coming into the contest. Ryan Miller was charged with four goals on 36 shots in the loss.

Philadelphia drew first blood in the game with 1:21 to play in the first period as Braydon Coburn cranked a big slap shot from the left point that Carcillo tipped out of the air and into the net.

Pronger made it a 2-0 game just 28 seconds into the second period as his wrister from the left point beat Miller.

Skating on the power play, Buffalo cut its deficit in half. Jason Pominville let fly with a one-timer from the left point that missed the net, but it hit off the backboards and went to the right side where Roy tapped it in just four minutes after the Pronger goal.

However, van Riemsdyk made it a 3-1 game with 5:05 left in the second period with his third goal of the season.

At the 2:34 mark of the third, Powe’s slap shot from the high slot got past Miller for a 4-1 advantage.

The Sabres again used the power play as Myers’ third goal of the season with 9:26 to play made it a 4-2 contest.

Buffalo pulled Miller late in the game for an extra attacker, but Carcillo sealed the win with an empty-netter.

Game Notes

Philadelphia took all four games against Buffalo last season…Philadelphia hosts St. Louis on Saturday…Buffalo plays in Boston on Saturday…Buffalo went 2-for-4 on the power play, while Philadelphia failed to score on any of its four chances.

Washington, DC (Sports Network) – Alexander Semin returned to the lineup and notched the game-winning goal in the third period, as Washington extended its winning streak to five games with a 4-2 win over Philadelphia at Verizon Center.

Semin, who missed the last two games with an illness, picked up his seventh goal on the year and had two assists, sparking a slumping power play by setting up a Nicklas Backstrom tally on the man advantage. Backstrom added three assists, including a set up of an Alex Ovechkin score. The Russian superstar also added an empty-net tally to take the league lead with 11 goals.

Jose Theodore made 41 saves for the Capitals, whose current win streak comes on the heels of a four-game slide, which began when Philadelphia notched a 6-5 overtime win over visiting Washington on October 6.

Scott Hartnell and Braydon Coburn scored power-play goals for the Flyers, who had a brief two-game win streak halted with Sunday’s 4-1 home loss to San Jose. Ray Emery turned back 32-of-35 shots in the setback.

Semin gained the Flyers’ zone just past the five-minute mark of the third, skated into the left circle and simply ripped a shot over Emery’s right shoulder to give the Caps a 3-2 lead.

Darroll Powe was awarded a penalty shot a short time later after being taken down from behind, but fired low into the pads of Theodore from in close at 6:47.

Theodore stood tall with 20 third-period saves to allow Semin’s goal to stand up and Ovechkin scored into an empty net with 46 ticks left to seal the outcome.

The goaltenders kept things scoreless moving to the second period, where Philadelphia took a 2-0 lead by capitalizing with the man advantage. Hartnell took a cross-ice feed from Mike Richards at the lower left circle for a one- timer that screamed past Theodore for a 1-0 lead at 3:06.

Coburn then found the back of the net at 14:29 with a slap shot before the Caps scored twice in the final 3:52 of the period to tie the game. Ovechkin got things started, taking a pass from Backstrom and beating Emery top shelf over the left shoulder.

A little over two minutes later, Semin set up Backstrom with a pass from the left corner for a one-timer that snuck by Emery to tie the game.

Game Notes

The Flyers had taken three of the last four games from Washington in the nation’s capital entering Tuesday…Ovechkin is leading Washington with 11 goals and 19 points this year. Ovechkin has rarely found it difficult to score against the Flyers, notching 30 points (18 goals, 12 assists) in 18 career tests versus Philly…Washington snapped an 0-for-14 slump on the man advantage with Backstrom’s second period power-play goal…Semin has 13 points (7g, 6a) in nine games this season, including two goals and three helpers on the power play…Flyers forward Simon Gagne sat out Tuesday after the discovery of two small hernias in the area of his right groin. Gagne had an ultrasound on Monday and was examined at Pennsylvania Hospital Tuesday which confirmed the findings. Team medical staff will meet with the 10-year veteran on Wednesday to discuss his options going forward.

Philadelphia, PA (Sports Network) – Manny Malhotra scored two quick goals in the second period to help the San Jose Sharks close out a six-game road trip with a 4-1 victory over the Philadelphia Flyers.

Malhotra went his last 18 regular season games without scoring a goal before Sunday’s win, which helped the Sharks finish their trip with a 4-2-0 record. San Jose also extended its unbeaten streak over the Flyers to 10 games.

Dany Heatley and Jed Ortmeyer also scored, while Thomas Greiss stopped 37 shots to earn his first win of the season.

Darroll Powe scored the only goal for the Flyers, who have lost four of six. Brian Boucher allowed four goals on 28 shots in his first start of the season.

The Sharks struck first with a power play goal in the first period. The puck got caught in between Boucher’s skates, and Heatley jammed away at it with his stick until it popped free and into the net at the 6:20 mark.

The Flyers tied the game three minutes later on Powe’s one-timer from the slot that beat Greiss.

Malhotra, though, gave San Jose a two-goal lead with two scores in a 2:14 span in the second period. The first goal came as a bit of a fluke, as Malhotra flipped the puck toward the crease only to hit a Flyers defenseman and Boucher’s stick before finding the back of the net.

His second goal was a bit more conventional, as Malhotra found a loose puck in the offensive zone and fired a wrist shot from the right circle that flew above Boucher’s left shoulder and into the net at 10:05 for a 3-1 lead.

In the closing minutes, Ortmeyer fired a quick wrister from the left circle that snuck past Boucher to account for the final margin.

Game Notes

The Flyers haven’t beaten the Sharks since December 21, 2000, as they are 0-7-0 with two ties in that span…San Jose’s Joe Thornton had an assist, marking the seventh straight game against the Flyers that he has recorded a point…Sharks forward Patrick Marleau had two assists, giving him 10 points in five games.

Philadelphia, PA (Sports Network) – Claude Giroux notched the lone goal of the shootout as Philadelphia clipped Boston, 4-3, at Wachovia Center.

After four scoreless shooters, Giroux opened the third round by making several stick fakes on the forehand before slipping a shot inside the right post. On Boston’s turn to keep the game alive, Michael Ryder drilled a shot through to the left post, but it caught iron and bounced out to end the contest.

“There are great shooters on this team, but I didn’t want to let the guys down,” said Giroux. “I was pretty happy to score. I like it, there’s more pressure and responsibility.”

Chris Pronger, Darroll Powe and Arron Asham tallied for the Flyers, who snapped a three-game losing skid. Ray Emery made 23 saves for his fourth win of the season.

Derek Morris, Matt Hunwick and Steve Begin scored for the Bruins, who have lost two of three. Tuukka Rask was strong in defeat, making 36 stops.

“We’re happy, we’re playing hard,” said Morris. “At the beginning of the year we were kind of in-and-out. One period we were good, one shift we were good, the next shift we were bad. We’re getting a consistent game back, which is good come down the long run.”

Pronger’s slap shot from the point beat Rask high to the glove side with 7:57 to play in the first period, but the Bruins countered on the power play with 2:34 left as Morris’ point shot changed direction on its way to the back of the net.

Hunwick’s chance from the left point hit a pair of bodies in the slot on the way past Emery for a 2-1 Bruins edge at the 7:36 mark of the second, then Powe lifted a loose puck over a scramble in the crease a little more than a minute later.

Asham’s wrister from the right circle put the Flyers ahead with 6:54 left in the period, and Begin countered for the Bruins with 3:34 to go for a 3-3 deadlock.

A Bruins power play late in regulation nearly netted Philly’s winning goal, as Jeff Carter moved in on a short-handed breakaway, but Rask stopped his backhand chance.

Game Notes

The Flyers hadn’t beaten the Bruins in Philadelphia since March 10, 2007…Boston has won five of the last nine meetings…Ole-Kristian Tollefsen netted a pair of assists for Philly.

Newark, NJ (Sports Network) – Ray Emery posted his second straight victory with 24 saves as the Philadelphia Flyers downed the New Jersey Devils, 5-2, at Prudential Center.

Jeff Carter, Mike Richards, Ian Laperriere and Darroll Powe tallied for Philadelphia, which posted just its second road victory over New Jersey since March, 2004.

Matt Carle had a goal and one assist while James vanRiemsdyk added two helpers for the Flyers, who have won the season’s first two games for the first time since beginning the 1998-99 season with three straight victories.

Brian Rolston and Jamie Langenbrunner provided the offense for the Devils, who have dropped two of their three home openers since moving from the Meadowlands prior to the 2007-08 season.

Martin Brodeur’s 1,000th career game was one to forget, as the future Hall of Famer looked shaky in allowing all five goals on 27 shots.

The Flyers killed off a two-man disadvantage midway through the first period and the visitors were rewarded when Carter tallied by following up his own rebound and beating Brodeur from the left side at 15:57.

Philly also had to weather an early two-man down situation in the second period, and after Emery made some key stops Laperriere beat Brodeur from a sharp angle on the right side for a 2-0 game at 9:20.

Richards then put the Flyers up by three with 4:37 to play, when his spinning wraparound got past the Devils’ veteran netminder.

Powe managed to flutter a shot from the outer edge of the left circle into the net at the 7:34 mark of the third period for a 4-0 game, but Rolston blistered a shot from the left wing at 9:44 to put the Devils on the board with a power- play score.

Carle slammed a rolling puck home low to the far side with 8:47 to play and the Flyers led 5-1 before Langenbrunner notched a short-handed score with 6:20 remaining.

Emery and the Flyers shut the door for the remainder of the contest.
Game Notes

The Flyers improved to 2-10-4 in northern New Jersey over the last four-plus seasons…Philly begins the home portion of its schedule on Tuesday against Washington…The Jersey-born vanRiemsdyk, a second-overall pick of the Flyers in 2007, has three points (all assists) in two games this year…Dainius Zubrus picked up two assists for the Devils.
