Philadelphia, PA (Sports Network) – Jeff Carter had two goals and an assist as the Philadelphia Flyers took a 4-2 win over the Carolina Hurricanes at Wachovia Center.

Chris Pronger had a goal and an assist while Daniel Carcillo had a goal for the Flyers, who have won the first three games of a six-game homestand. Ray Emery stopped 33 shots in the win.

Eric Staal and Rod Brind’Amour each had a goal for the Hurricanes, who have dropped four of their last five.

Manny Legace started the game in net, but left early in the first period with a recurrence of pink eye. He gave up one goal on seven shots while Cam Ward played the rest of the game in net and allowed two goals on 22 shots.

Carolina made it a one-goal game just 1:21 into the third on a lucky break as Emery misplayed the puck behind his net where Sergei Samsonov grabbed it and threw a blind pass out front where Brind’Amour fired it home for his fifth goal of the season.

Mike Richards was awarded a penalty shot with 8:03 to play as he was interfered with on a breakaway, but he blew his chance to give the Flyers a two-goal lead as he shot it a rolling puck over the net.

The Hurricanes were given a power play with 2:12 to play when Braydon Coburn was called for slashing and Ward was pulled from the net moments later for a 6-on-4 advantage, but Emery preserved the lead with a pair of stops down low on Brind’Amour and Carter got the puck into the open net with just 0.6 seconds left to seal the win.

Philly drew first blood as Carcillo stole the puck off a Carolina player near the blueline, skated in all alone and went backhand to forehand before lifting the puck over Legace just 3:05 in.

Carolina, though, tied the game on the power play with 59.7 seconds left in the first as Jussi Jokinen sent a saucer pass from the left circle to the front where a wide open Staal slammed it home.

The Hurricanes came out on fire in the second period and had several scoring chances through the first several minutes, but Emery was able to make the stops and keep the game tied.

The Flyers then took the lead back just three seconds into a power play as Carter won a right circle faceoff draw back to Pronger, who wristed the puck off the right post and past Ward with 5:49 to play in the second.

Philly then made it a 3-1 game just 1:45 later as a Carolina player skated past the puck at his own right circle and Aaron Asham passed it from there to the slot where Carter fired a wrister home for his 20th goal of the season.

Game Notes

Philadelphia continues its six-game homestand on Sunday against Pittsburgh…Carolina hosts Boston on Sunday…The Flyers took all four games against Carolina this season and have won 11 of the last 13, overall…Richards is 0-for-5 on penalty shots in his career.

Raleigh, NC (Sports Network) – Danny Briere posted the shootout winner, as Philadelphia blew a three-goal third-period lead but recovered to top Carolina, 4-3, at RBC Center.

Briere finished the first round by sliding a backhander inside the right post, then Michael Leighton robbed Jussi Jokinen to begin the second round with a prone glove save. Mike Richards then ended the game by sneaking a backhander home.

Richards, Briere and Jeff Carter hit the net for the Flyers, who picked up a win in head coach Peter Laviolette’s first trip back to Raleigh since being fired as Hurricanes head coach last December.

Leighton finished with 37 saves for the win, Philadelphia’s second in a row on its current six-game road trip.

“We take a step, and we take another small step,” said Laviolette of his club’s minute gains. “Just gotta keep working out and getting better, but the important thing is that the end result is one, to move up in the standings, and two, just for some confidence to build, start trying to put some things together.”

Jokinen tallied twice and Brandon Sutter once for the Hurricanes, who scored three times in the third period but suffered their third straight loss. Cam Ward made 33 stops in defeat.

The Flyers took a 1-0 lead 9:47 mark of the opening period when Richards elevated a Claude Giroux rebound past Ward.

Carter’s sizzling wrister from the slot made it 2-0 for the Flyers with 6:05 left in the first, and Leighton made the lead hold up through two periods by stopping all 18 shots he faced.

Briere’s top-shelf wrister on a power play with 11 minutes left in regulation gave the Flyers a 3-0 advantage, but 24 seconds later, Jokinen’s backhander hit a leg in front and trickled home.

Sutter cut the Hurricanes’ deficit to 3-2 on a man advantage with 4:02 to play, after he outmuscled a Philly checker on a dump-in and fired past Leighton from the left side.

That set the stage for Jokinen, who tied the game less than a minute later by tapping home a loose puck in the crease.

“I think a lot of it has to do with how you’re playing, if you’re down three and you aren’t playing very well its very difficult,” said Hurricanes head coach Paul Maurice. It’s very difficult to believe in the game that you can come back. We did enough sitting on their goal line to know if we got one, we knew we could get three.”

Game Notes

The Flyers have won seven of the last eight meetings in North Carolina, and nine of the last 11 overall against the Hurricanes since the start of the 2007-08 season…Philly defenseman Ryan Parent did not play after suffering a lower-body injury some time during warmups…Carolina fell to 3-4 in shootouts this season.

Philadelphia, PA (Sports Network) – David Laliberte’s first NHL game was a memorable one, as the rookie tallied a goal and an assist in Philadelphia’s 6-1 win over Carolina at Wachovia Center.

Laliberte was recalled from the AHL on Friday to replace the injured Daniel Briere, and he registered his first career goal early in the first period before adding an assist in the second. Braydon Coburn contributed two goals, while Scott Hartnell and Matt Carle each had a goal and two assists in the win. James van Riemsdyk added a goal and an assist for the Flyers, who finished October at 6-4-1.

Ray Emery beat the Hurricanes for the second time this season by making 39 saves. Philadelphia’s netminder posted a shutout on the road in his debut at Raleigh on October 2.

Brandon Sutter scored the only goal for Carolina, which has lost eight straight games, the longest skid for the club since January 8-22, 2003. Should the Hurricanes lose their next contest, it would match a franchise record, set when the team played in Hartford during the 1982-83 season.

Michael Leighton allowed six goals on 28 shots to take the loss.

After killing off two early penalties, the Flyers went in front with a power play goal. Chris Pronger took a quick wrist shot from the point, and it deflected off Hartnell, who was stationed in front of the goaltender, and into the back of the net at 8:04 of the first period.

Just 4 1/2 minutes later, the newest player for Philadelphia scored his first career goal. Ryan Parent sent in a shot from the point, hitting Leighton right in the chest. The puck bounced off to the side, where Laliberte fired a shot from a wide angle into the top right corner for a 2-0 lead.

The Flyers scored again with 2:39 left in the opening period on Carle’s wrap- around shot for a commanding three-goal lead.

Carolina got on the board early in the second period on Sutter’s one-timer from the left circle, but van Riemsdyk’s backhand flip got past Leighton 14 seconds later for a 4-1 Flyers lead.

Coburn’s goal off a van Riemsdyk shot at the 8:08 mark of the third extended the lead to four, and Coburn scored again on a blistering slapshot from the point 90 seconds later to account for the final margin.

Game Notes

It was the Flyers’ most convincing victory on Halloween since a 9-1 rout of the Minnesota North Stars on October 31, 1976 at the Spectrum….Coburn notched his first career two-goal game…Carolina’s next game is Sunday at home against San Jose, which has won four in a row…Forward Blair Betts played for the Flyers for the first time since dislocating his shoulder three weeks ago against Washington. Parent also returned from a groin injury…Carolina’s Tuomo Ruutu served the last of his three-game suspension…Sutter ended a 46-game goal-less drought with his score.

Raleigh, NC (Sports Network) – Ray Emery stopped all 28 shots he faced to post his ninth career shutout, as the Philadelphia Flyers shut down the Carolina Hurricanes, 2-0, in the season opener for both teams at RBC Center.

After a one-year stint in Russia’s Kontinental Hockey League, Emery earned his first NHL victory since February 23, 2008 while tending net for Ottawa. He also picked up his first regular-season whitewash since February 28, 2007, coincidentally against Carolina.

Jeff Carter and Mike Richards tallied for the Flyers, who suffered a first- round exit at the hands of Stanley Cup champion Pittsburgh last season.

Cam Ward made 25 saves in defeat for the Hurricanes, who made a surprise run to the Eastern Conference finals before also falling to the Penguins.

After launching 15 shots on net in a scoreless first period, the Flyers got on the board twice in a 22-second span early in the second.

With Sergei Samsonov off on a double-minor for high sticking committed late in the first period, Carter struck at 25 seconds and Richards came back at the 47-second mark.

On the first score, Carter was able to shovel a loose puck off a Danny Briere chance into the cage beneath a fallen Ward, while Richards on the second goal redirected Simon Gagne’s shot from the right wing.

Emery halted eight Hurricane shots in the middle 20 minutes to make the lead hold up, then came up with 12 saves in the third period to lock up the victory.

Carolina enjoyed a 6-on-4 advantage with Ward pulled and a power play in the final 36 seconds but had only one quality chance before time ran out.

Game Notes

The Flyers won three of four matchups last year and have taken seven of the last nine meetings…Philly hasn’t lost in Carolina since February 22, 2007 and improved to 7-0-1 in its last eight games there since October, 2005…The Flyers’ last opening-game shutout victory came on October 9, 2003 against Buffalo…Their last road opener shutout occurred on October 9, 1998 at Madison Square Garden against the Rangers…The Flyers ended 2-for-5 on the power play, while Carolina misfired on all eight of its chances.

Philadelphia, PA (Sports Network) – Jeff Carter scored the game-winner early in the third period, as the Philadelphia Flyers locked up a playoff berth by edging Florida, 2-1, at Wachovia Center.

Joffrey Lupul picked up the other goal for the Flyers, who have won two of three and earned their third trip to the postseason in the last four seasons. Coupled with the Hurricanes’ rout of the Islanders, Philly and Carolina are still deadlocked for the fourth seed at 97 points. The Flyers have one game in hand on the Hurricanes, however.

Martin Biron made 29 stops for the win, his 28th of the season.

Brett McLean provided the lone offense for the Panthers, who have dropped two of three and slipped into ninth place in the East, two points behind New York after the Rangers topped Montreal.

Tomas Vokoun was strong in the loss with 28 saves.

Carter put the Flyers ahead at the 7:32 mark of the third period, hitting the net from a sharp angle along the goal line with a shot that appeared to trickle through a small space between the left post and Vokoun’s equipment.

Philadelphia’s defense was able to clamp down with the lead, allowing just five Panther shots over the final 20 minutes.

Vokoun was called to the bench for an extra attacker with 1:14 to play, and the only time Biron was tested came with 10 seconds left, as he was quick to stop a backhander by David Booth by closing his pads.

Florida picked up the first goal of the contest. Michael Frolik beat a Flyers defenseman to a dump-in and dished into the slot for McLean for a glove-side wrister exactly 4 1/2 minutes into the second period.

Lupul was credited with the tying goal with 4:15 to play in the second. Matt Carle carried to the goal line on the right wing and dished into the crease, where the puck hit Lupul’s skate, clipped the left post and settled in.

Game Notes

Carter has 12 game-winning tallies on the year, tops in the NHL, and also moved into second place in the NHL’s goal-scoring race, one ahead of Devils forward Zach Parise who was blanked in Toronto’s 4-1 win…The clubs split four meetings this season…Philly defenseman Ryan Parent suffered a lower- body injury in the second period and did not return…Flyers forward Riley Cote was lost for the remainder of the season following surgery on his right ring finger on Tuesday.

Ottawa, ON (Sports Network) – Mike Fisher scored in the fifth round of the shootout as the Ottawa Senators slipped by the Philadelphia Flyers, 4-3, at Scotiabank Place.

After Claude Giroux went backhand to forehand and smacked it off the right side of the net, Fisher skated in on net and buried a wrister past Antero Niittymaki for the win.

Jason Spezza had a goal and an assist while Chris Kelly and Nick Foligno also lit the lamp for the Senators, who had dropped four of five coming into the game. Alex Auld stopped 31 shots in the win.

“It’s always nice to get a win in front of the home crowd,” said Spezza. “We got a few games left here and we want to end the season on a good note.”

Mike Richards had a goal and an assist while Simon Gagne and Darroll Powe also had a goal apiece for the Flyers, who have dropped four of their last six games. Niittymaki made 35 saves in the loss.

“He gives our team a chance every time he’s out there,” said Philadelphia head coach John Stevens about Niittymaki. “He’s a big reason we got a point here so we just have to move on.”

Philadelphia has 95 points on the season and sits in the fourth spot in the Eastern Conference. The team is tied with Carolina in points, but Philadelphia has played one less game than the Hurricanes.

Skating with a 5-on-3 advantage, the Senators took a 1-0 lead. Daniel Alfredsson sent the puck from the slot to the low left side. From there, Spezza whipped it across the net for Foligno, who tapped it in for his 17th goal of the season at the 10:42 mark of the first.

Ottawa took a 2-0 lead at the 2:26 mark of the second period when Kelly was sprung on a breakaway and he slid the disc between the pads of Niittymaki.

Just 32 seconds later, though, Powe was hooked on a breakaway and was awarded a penalty shot. He made it count as he slipped a low backhand past the left pad of Auld for his sixth goal of the season.

Philadelphia then tied the game at the 10:46 mark on the power play as Danny Briere won a right circle faceoff back to Richards, who let fly with a shot that went into the net for his 30th goal of the season.

Philly took a 3-2 lead just 28 seconds into the third period. A strong forecheck resulted in the puck going out front where Richards grabbed it and sent it down low for Gagne, who stuffed a backhand in from the right side.

However, the Sens answered a bit over three minutes later as Spezza’s quick wrist shot from the left circle beat Niittymaki to tie the game.

Game Notes

The Flyers have four players with at least 30 goals on the season. In addition to Richards, Jeff Carter, Gagne and Scott Hartnell have all reached the mark…Philly hosts Florida on Tuesday…Ottawa plays in Montreal on Monday…Ottawa took three of four from Philly this season…Since 1998-99, Philadelphia is 4-10-2 with five ties at Scotiabank Place, and has one win in its last seven road games over the Senators…Both teams went 1-for-2 on the power play.

04/04-Saturday Morning Coffee

Posted on April 4th, 2009 by Buts

A BIG shout out to my dad Jim Butler Sr who underwent another knee surgery today and is laid up in the hospital for a few days. For those who don’t know my Dad he blew his knee out in a mosh pit at my wedding, sadly I’m not joking.

So this Sean Avery kid can play hockey. Who knew

Who turned the Canes into umm well the Stanley Cup Canes, holy they are into one.

The Thrashers are 11-3 in there last 14 games. what? I’m telling you right now folks Bogosion is going to be a MONSTER.

My Mom bought some girl guide cookies the other day, Do you like the vanilla or chocolate better? Apparently I like both just fine!

So Keith Primeau offered to donate his brain to science after he dies for scientific reasons, that’s interesting.

Sean Avery heard this and offered to do the same, they thanked him but they told him they already picked his up last year.

Is Biron the answer for the Flyers? I say no.

Did you know that Canadians eat more Kraft Dinner than any other country in the world!

vroom vroom party starter, ha.

Flyers 8 Leafs 5, holy smokes who called the 80′s.

Briere to Giroux or Giroux to Briere. Anyway you say it it’s fun to watch.

Did you know that Curtis Joseph is tied for the most loses in NHL history with 351.

Did you know Curtis Joseph is about 3 months from having a full blown comb over, cut that hair Cujo the comb over is not a good look.

Olli Jokinen you may want to get your act together, you seem to be dragging the Flames into mediocreville.

If Mediocreville was a song I think Tom Cochrane would sing it and it would be about the Leafs.

I don’t get that New Jersey team, I thought that had it all going now I’m not so sure.

Well the Flyers inked JVR to a contract this week, for some reason I just don’t like the kid.

Have a great week end Hooligans.

Philadelphia, PA (Sports Network) – Jeff Carter notched the first hat trick of his career and added an assist, as the Philadelphia Flyers outlasted the Toronto Maple Leafs, 8-5, in the back end of a home-and-home set at the Wachovia Center.

Danny Briere had a goal and three assists while Claude Giroux added a goal and two helpers for the Flyers, who had dropped three of four coming into the game. Marty Biron stopped 27 shots in the win.

Philadelphia now has 94 points on the season and moved into the fourth spot in the Eastern Conference, one point ahead of Carolina. Also, the Flyers have a game in hand on the Hurricanes.

Nikolai Kulemin had a goal and two assists while Luke Schenn and Jamal Mayers each added a goal and an assist for the Maple Leafs, who have lost three of their last four. Martin Gerber and Curtis Joseph each saw time in net, with Gerber giving up six goals on 30 shots and Joseph allowing two goals on five shots.

On Wednesday, Ian White netted the game-winner in the second period and Joseph was solid with 32 saves to help Toronto to a 3-2 win over Philly.

The Flyers assumed a large lead in the first period, scoring five times while blanking the Leafs for the opening 20 minutes.

Randy Jones got things started, as he backhanded a loose puck into the net just 4:24 in, and Giroux made it 2-0 at the 7:48 mark when he slammed the puck in from down low.

Philadelphia made it 3-0 on the power play, as Mike Richards sent a pass from the left point to the slot where Simon Gagne kicked it from his skate to his stick and wristed the puck through a screen at the 9:02 mark to chase Gerber from the net.

Joseph, though, fared no better, as Scott Hartnell got his 30th goal of the season when his shot from the top of the left circle went off the stick of Pavel Kubina and snuck into the net with 3:37 left in the frame.

Carter completed the barrage 1 1/2 minutes later as he was sprung on a breakaway and lifted a backhand into the top of the net.

Carter notched his second goal of the game 6:48 into the second period, as he redirected a Briere pass at the left side of the net.

Toronto, though, notched three goals on three straight shots in the latter portion of the second period to cut its deficit in half.

On the power play, Schenn notched his second goal of the season, as his shot from the right point went through a screen, and Boyd Devereaux scored 1:37 later when his one-timer went past Biron’s glove

Mikhail Grabovski made it a 6-3 game with 11.4 seconds left in the frame, as his turnaround slap shot beat Biron.

Carter, though, completed the hat trick 4:37 into the third period, when his shot from a sharp angle at the left side squeezed past Gerber.

Toronto got a goal back at the 7:32 mark, as Biron left a lazy rebound in front and Kulemin wristed it home.

Less than three minutes later, though, Giroux hit Briere with a perfect pass in the slot and Briere fired it home.

Toronto got a goal from Mayers with 8:21 to play to account for the final score.

Game Notes

Toronto center Christian Hanson made his NHL debut in the game. He is the son of Dave Hanson, one of the famed Hanson brothers from the movie “Slapshot”…Philadelphia plays in Ottawa on Saturday…The Leafs host the Canadiens on Saturday…Each team won twice in the season series…Toronto went 1-for-3 on the power play while Philly finished the game 1-for-5.
