03/01-Saturday Morning Coffee

Posted on February 28th, 2009 by Buts

Congratulation to Kirk Maltby on playing game 1000 in the NHL. 4 Stanley Cups and pure class on and off the ice.

In the long run I think the Pens made a massive error trading Whitney. Kunitz may be OK for a bit but he’s a 30 year old 2nd liner. Whitney can become a 55 point #1 D-man, you don’t trade those guys.

Steve Begin traded, you trade those guys.

Did you know Danny Briere leads the NHL with 50 playoff points since the lock out.

I hate blue cheese.

Can you get a low ankle sprain?

The Sabres playoff hopes are on the shoulders of Patrick Lalime, he’s the guy who dashed the Sens playoff runs year after year

If the Pens get the #8 seed and I think they will make the playoffs, but if they do I am calling it right now, the Pens will upset the Bruins in the 1st round.

I don’t care if Scottie Bowman is the new coach of the Rangers, they are crap.

That being said you will see Redden improve drastically and statistically.

Can you believe that the Sens kept Redden over Chara, that is unreal.

Welcome back Danny Briere, go do your point a game play off thing.

Who’s skinner, Ryan Miller or Marty Biron?

Must suck being an NHL tough guy, you see the playoffs are 20+ games away and you know your season is done as soon as the playoffs start.

Why is every NHL game not on HD? They need to make that happen.

Speaking of making things happen, here come the Wings just revving it up.

As far as stats go Malkin is better then both OV and Sid. But my eyes tell my differently, I finds that weird but true.

Brodeur with a Shut out first game back, too funny.

Below is a request from a friend and reader of this blog, if you have a few minutes it would be appreciated.

I am asking you to take minute of your time today to vote for Woolwich as Kraft Hockeyville 2009.  Go here to vote: www.woolwichhockeyville.ca.

Have a great week end hooligans.

Philadelphia, PA (Sports Network) – Mathieu Schneider scored on the power play 3:21 into overtime, as the Montreal Canadiens took a 4-3 decision from the Philadelphia Flyers at the Wachovia Center.

Montreal got a power play due to an interference call on Scottie Upshall, and it took advantage. Antero Niittymaki initially made some great glove saves, but Schneider blasted a shot from the right circle past the goaltender’s glove for the win.

Alex Kovalev finished with a goal and two assists for Montreal, which has won three straight on the heels of a three-game slide. Tomas Plekanec and Tom Kostopoulos also scored, while Jaroslav Halak made 35 saves to earn the victory.

Joffrey Lupul, Simon Gagne and Mike Richards all scored for the Flyers, who had won five of six coming into the game. Niittymaki allowed four goals on 36 shots to take the loss.

Philadelphia was dreadful on the power play, going 0-for-8 in the contest. Montreal converted on 2-of-5 chances.

The Flyers wasted no time getting on the board. On the first shift of the game, Lupul gathered a loose rebound in front of the net and deposited the puck past a sprawled-out Halak just 28 seconds into the contest.

Glen Metropolit, who was claimed by the Canadiens off waivers from the Flyers on Friday, went in for a breakaway after a penalty about five minutes into the first period, but Niittymaki made an outstanding glove save to keep the Habs off the board.

Richards put the Flyers ahead by two at the 8:14 mark of the first, when he forced a turnover at the right circle and fired a quick wrist shot over Halak’s shoulder.

Montreal tied the game with two goals in 13 seconds late in the opening frame. Plekanec made it 2-1 on a power play goal with 3:35 left, firing a shot from the slot, and a wraparound goal by Kostopoulos shortly thereafter tied the game.

Kovalev gave the Canadiens a 3-2 lead going to the first intermission, as his wrister from the right circle bounced off Niittymaki’s right shoulder and into the net with 1:31 showing on the clock.

Gagne, like Metropolit, found himself on a breakaway right after serving a penalty late in the second period. Unlike his former teammate, Gagne tucked the puck under Halak’s pads to tie the game with 6:17 left in the frame.

Niittymaki’s 12 saves in the third period, along with Halak’s eight saves, sent the game to overtime.

Game Notes

Kovalev’s 28 lifetime goals against the Flyers are the most among active players…The Canadiens won the season series, 3-1…In addition to losing Metropolit, the Flyers also gave up defenseman Ossi Vaananan to waivers, and he was claimed by Vancouver…Flyers forward Scott Hartnell earned his 300th career point with an assist in the first period, and Jeff Carter extended his point streak to four with an assist in the opening frame for Philadelphia.

Philadelphia, PA (Sports Network) – Martin Biron turned away all 34 shots he faced to notch his 25th career shutout, as the Philadelphia Flyers defeated the Los Angeles Kings, 2-0, at the Wachovia Center.

Jeff Carter registered a goal and an assist for the Flyers, who have won seven of their last nine games and are second in the Atlantic Division with 75 points, four behind the idle New Jersey Devils.

The 11th overall pick in the 2003 draft, Carter has found the net with great frequency this season, pumping in 36 goals, second only to Washington sniper Alex Ovechkin (44).

Erik Ersberg was equally impressive between the pipes for Los Angeles, making 18 saves in defeat. Playing in the second leg of a five-game road trip, the Kings have dropped six of eight.

Carter broke the scoreless deadlock on the power play with 3:49 remaining in the middle stanza. Joffrey Lupul threw the puck to the front of the net. As players collapsed around the Los Angeles netminder, Carter was positioned at the far post and was able to jam the puck behind Ersberg.

The Kings came in waves over the final 20 minutes, pressing for the equalizer, but Simon Gagne’s empty-net tally in the game’s dying seconds cemented the win.

Game Notes

Flyers defenseman Kimmo Timonen missed his second straight game with the flu…Los Angeles has lost nine of its last 10 at Philadelphia…Biron is 4-0-0 in five career starts against the Kings.

Washington, DC (Sports Network) – Jeff Carter notched the game-winner as Philadelphia used a three-goal third-period burst to take down Washington, 4-2, at Verizon Center.

Claude Giroux, Scott Hartnell and Arron Asham also lit the lamp for the Flyers, who have won four of their last five games.

Antero Niittymaki was stellar between the pipes, making 33 saves.

Nicklas Backstrom and Alex Ovechkin picked up a goal each for the Capitals, who had won four of five coming in.

Jose Theodore made 33 stops but faltered over the final 20 minutes to take the loss.

Early in the third, Theodore made a spectacular short-handed save on Mike Knuble, as the veteran winger had all the time he needed to lift a shot into an open net but was foiled by the Caps’ netminder’s stacked pads.

The Flyers kept digging, however, and Hartnell tied the game with 10:49 left in regulation, hitting the top-right corner of the net from the left wing after Joffrey Lupul hit him in stride with a perfect drop pass.

Carter put the Flyers ahead with 9:24 left in the contest, taking a loose puck off a Lupul shot from the right side of the crease and slipping the disc under the crossbar.

Asham then made a move around two Caps defensemen and a great cut in front of Theodore to beat him with 7:30 to play and Philly was up by two.

Niittymaki was strong down the stretch and the Flyers emerged with the key road victory.

On the power play, Backstrom converted an Ovechkin feed for a 1-0 Caps lead 1:48 into the contest. The advantage grew to a pair of goals 4:19 into the second period as Ovechkin converted a turnover by Carter and unloaded a one- timer.

Giroux brought Philly within one, one-timing a Mike Richards feed for a 5-on-3 score at 9:22 of the second.

Game Notes

Carter’s goal was his 35th of the season, tying him with Zach Parise of New Jersey for second-most in the NHL. Ovechkin leads with 44…Washington has won seven of the last 11 meetings, but Philadelphia has taken two of three this season…Flyers defenseman Kimmo Timonen missed the game with the flu, the latest player to be struck down by the bug which has troubled the team for a month…The clubs meet one final time this season, in Philadelphia, on March 12.

Richards Gets 1st Star Honors From NHL

Posted on February 23rd, 2009 by The FlyerFly

In a move befitting the outstanding week Mike Richards had (not even including the game on the 15th against the Rangers where he scored his NHL record-setting third 3-on-5 shorthanded goal), the league bestowed their highest weekly honor upon the Flyers captain.

http://flyers.nhl.com/team/app?articleid=410683&page=NewsPage&service=page

FIRST STAR — MIKE RICHARDS, C, PHILADELPHIA FLYERS

Richards led all NHL scorers with eight points (three goals, five assists) in two games. He began the week by posting single-game career highs with five points (two goals, three assists) and a +5 rating in a 6-3 victory over the Buffalo Sabres Feb. 19 and tallied his League-leading seventh shorthanded goal of the season and added a pair of assists in a 5-4 loss to the Pittsburgh Penguins Feb. 21. The 24-year-old Flyers captain leads his club in assists (37) and hits (106) and shares the club lead in points (23-37–60) and plus-minus (+23).

And included in his First Star status, the red hot shorthanded specialist topped the NHL’s Hot List as well.

Richards is NHL’s most dangerous penalty killer
Monday, 02.23.2009 / 9:29 AM / The Hot List
By John Kreiser - NHL.com Columnist

Mike Richards may be the only player in the NHL who’s more dangerous when the other team has the man advantage.

The Philadelphia Flyers’ center has emerged as one of the League’s best two-way players, combining offensive talents, defensive skills and leadership. But he seems to be at his best when the Flyers are trying to kill off an opponent’s power play.

Richards has a three-game scoring streak which is nothing unusual. What is unusual is that he has a shorthanded goal in each of the three games, including the only 3-on-5 goal of the season on Feb. 15 against the New York Rangers. His seven shorthanded goals are by far the most in the NHL.

Richards is pretty good in other situations, too.

He had 3 goals and 5 assists for 8 points in Philadelphia’s two games last week — including a five-point performance in a 6-3 win against Buffalo. With 60 points, he’s in a three-way tie for 14th in the League in scoring along with teammate Jeff Carter and Detroit’s Marian Hossa.

Not a bad week for one of the league’s hottest and fastest rising stars.  Richards continues to live up to his billing as the best thing to happen to the Flyers since Bobby Clarke.

Flyers Deadline Possibilities

Posted on February 21st, 2009 by The FlyerFly

With the NHL’s March 4th trade deadline just over a week away, the time has come for some of the most interesting and sometimes maddening hockey discussion of the season.  General Managers are busy meeting with their braintrusts and cooking up every conceivable salary cap-compliant scenario that could improve their teams’ chances of winning the Holy Grail of hockey.  Meanwhile, fans all over the league sit not-so-patiently, trying to read the minds of those in charge of their favorite clubs.  And rest assured that those same fans are ready to praise or pounce, depending on the outcomes.

So I will do my fanly duties and chime in on the chatter as well.

Where do the Flyers stand as the deadline looms near?  It’s no secret that the salary cap will place some heavy constraints on the options that present themselves to Paul Holmgren now and in the immediate future.  But can he realistically be expected to pull off a major deal?  The kind that could push the Flyers from a 5 or 6 seed to a top 3?

The fact that the Flyers made it to the Eastern Conference Finals last year was amazing based on more than the recovery from the disastrous year before.  It also was surprising because the goaltending had been thought of as questionable for most of the season, with neither Marty Biron or Antero Niittymaki really grabbing the reins.  Not until late February did Biron finally emerge and turn the corner toward an outstanding postseason debut as a starter.  Can Homer count on Marty to provide a repeat performance this year?  Even though he still finds himself struggling to hold onto his starter’s job?  And even if Marty doesn’t come back around, can Homer feel confident turning to Niittymaki when he also hasnt been able to put a stranglehold on the #1 job despite getting more than his share of chances over the last 2+ seasons?

Perhaps Holmgren could feel more confident with the goaltending situation if he had the defensive support necessary to make up the difference.  Unlike last season, there are alot of unanswered questions surrounding the current Flyers defense.  While puck handling and mobility are in no way in short supply on the blueline, the team continues to surrender way too many shots on net night after night.  Not condusive to an already unsteady goaltending situation, and an indication that the team is in need of a dependable top-pairing physical defenseman that can shut down the opposition’s best offensive offerings.

So the Flyers find themselves with one of two clear, yet not so simple options.  Get a definitive, undisputed #1 goaltender … OR … get a top-tier shutdown defenseman that can choke the life out of the league’s best scorers.

How does it happen?  Let’s look at four of the biggest names being kicked around and the possibilities that surround them and the Flyers…

1.  Niklas Backstrom

- The Minnesota Wild’s current #1 goalie is set to hit the open market on July 1st, and is reportedly very interested in doing so.  The Wild as of now are sitting in the 10 spot in the West, and are only 5-5-0 in their last 10 games.  Without a substantive turnaround and legit playoff push, the Wild are almost certain to deal Backstrom for some considerable talent, rather than let him walk at season’s end.
- How can the Flyers get him? – Not letting Backstrom hit the open market would be a wise, yet sizeable move by Paul Holmgren.  Backstrom currently is in the final year of his contract paying $3.1 million.  Bringing him on board now would have little impact on the current salary cap situation, but sending Martin Biron along with a package of other players to shed salary could both bring Backstrom to Philly and make enough room financially to keep him here.  He is likely to be seeking at least $4.5 million per year as a UFA, and could fetch as much as $6 million depending on who’s offering.  With Biron’s $3.5 million off the books, Homer would still need to make more salary room, and could do it by offering Joffery Lupul.  A top prospect like James van Riemsdyk or Claude Giroux is also almost certainly going to be on Minnesota’s asking list, but they may be able to get away with sending Andreas Nodl if they sweeten the deal with a 2nd or 3rd round draft pick.  There is hope that the Flyers might not have to go all the way to the high end of a new contract if “Backs” is willing to forego the largest paycheck possible for a bonafide shot at the Cup for the foreseeable future.  The Flyers can likely offer exactly that with the young, extremely talented core that has been assembled since the restructuring that began in the tail end of the 2006-07 season.

2.  Jay Bouwmeester

- The Florida Panthers’ #1 defenseman is going to be one of the most hotly pursued players both at the trade deadline, and at the July 1st opening of free agency provided that someone doesn’t sign him to a new contract beforehand.   Bouwmeester has made it clear that he doesn’t intend to return to Florida next season, but the Panthers are in a difficult position regarding a decision to trade him.  The coaching and management staffs aren’t too quick to shop Bouwmeester around primarily because they are currently a playoff team, and unless Florida gets a significant defenseman back in a trade, moving Bouwmeester will definitely hurt their chances of remaining in the postseason picture.  But the Panthers’ ownership isn’t very high on the idea of letting a player of J-Bo’s ilk just walk without getting value in return while they still can.

- How can the Flyers get him? – It goes without saying that the Flyers aren’t even going to be in the running for Bouwmeester’s services unless they are ready to part with some serious assets.  First, the Panthers are going to be looking to replace their #1 defenseman’s size and shut down capabilities on the back end.  Think Ryan Parent.  Parent seems to be cut of the same cloth as Bouwmeester; big and positionally solid in the defensive end, yet not a huge physical presence.  The big difference would be the salaries.  Parent has one more year on his entry level contract at $765,000, while Bouwmeester could land the biggest contract of the summer, if not the last couple of years.  Making room for him will not be easy by any stretch, but it can be done if the Flyers are willing to surrender a player like Scott Hartnell, who is set to make $4.2 million next season.  But that will undoubtedly not be enough as the Panthers will be looking for either van Riemsdyk or Giroux.  If Homer is committed to seeing both of those prospects on the Flyers roster in the future, than Bouwmeester is out of the question.

3.  Manny Fernandez

- The Bruins have two very solid and dependable netminders, and by the looks of things, they will only be intending upon keeping one of them going into next season.  Both Fernandez and Tim Thomas will be UFA’s come July 1st, and the Bruins are likely to try to resign Thomas, as he will no doubt come far cheaper than Fernandez who is already making $4.75 million this season.  Thomas is now making just $1.1 million and even with a sizeable raise is the more sensible salary cap option, especially when he has made a solid case for himself as the clear #1.  However, the knock on Fernandez is that in parts of 13 seasons in the NHL, Fernandez has played more than 44 games in a season just once.  So while Fernandez has more than proven his worth from game to game, he has yet to define himself as a franchise goaltender.

- How can the Flyers get him? – The methodology behind getting a hold of Fernandez isn’t alot different than Backstrom, but the one thing the Bruins would like to have is a two-way power forward.  Boston has been eyeing Edmonton’s Erik Cole for some time now, and many consider him to be the potential final piece to an already intimidating package.  If the Cole deal doesn’t appear to be coming together, the Bruins GM, Peter Chiarelli, may be intrigued at the idea of bringing Hartnell in as a second choice since they are similar in what they can offer.  Trouble is, there would be quite a few unhappy fans if they saw Hartnell going the other way without what they would consider a premier player pulling on a Flyers sweater.  In any case, the Flyers are going to have to also part with at least one other handsome prospect and a 2nd or 3rd round pick to get this deal done.

4.  Chris Pronger

- It’s unclear to this point whether or not the Ducks are going to part with either Scott Neidermayer or Chris Pronger as the deadline nears.  Anaheim is currently sitting on the bubble of the Western Conference playoff picture, but without an indication that the Ducks are going to get it together for real, management might decide to move one of their two biggest defensive assets.  Neidermayer is set for unrestricted free agency in July, and the well-traveled defenseman would be a great addition to any team seeking to help him win his 5th Stanley Cup.  But for the Flyers, Chris Pronger would be the better fit with his intimidating blueline presence and physical dominance.  Pronger still has 1 year left on his current contract worth $6.25 million, so there is no doubt that trying to fit him into next year’s plans would take some fancy manuveuring.  But getting him in the orange and black could do enough to support the current goaltending and lend that last element to the back end for a long run toward the Cup.

- How can the Flyers get him? – The way to get Pronger on the Flyers is simple.  Drop salary, and lots of it.  The details of the trade are largely an afterthought because at least with most deadline acquisitions, you dont have to worry about accomodating an existing contract.  Not that Homer should actually worry about those details afterwards, but most top-tier players you get at the deadline arent even sure if they will stick around.  No need to make long term salary considerations if you won’t have the player long-term.  But along with Pronger comes his big price tag, so expect at least one  high-priced top 6 forward to be going the other way.  And if the Ducks do indeed decide to make a trade of this magnitude, it will be clear that they will want young talent.  Joffrey Lupul is out…he’s already made a tour of Anaheim.  However, with Ryan Getzlaf, Corey Perry, and Bobby Ryan, the Ducks seem to have plenty to build their team around up front.  If they are set to lose defensive depth, Ryan Parent or Braydon Coburn might look particularly attractive to GM Bob Murray, as would Matt Carle or especially Luca Sbisa.  Sbisa’s showing this season may make him untouchable though, much to the relief of Flyers fans.  Draft picks, a promising young defenseman, and a top notch forward will get this deal done.

Philadelphia, PA (Sports Network) – Sidney Crosby scored twice, including the game-winner late in regulation after a miscue by Flyers netminder Martin Biron, as Pittsburgh escaped with a 5-4 win over Philadelphia at the Wachovia Center.

Ruslan Fedotenko added two goals and one assist for the Penguins, who have won two consecutive games despite wasting two-goal leads in each, and improved to 2-0-1 under interim head coach Dan Bylsma.

Pascal Dupuis chipped in with three helpers and Marc-Andre Fleury allowed four goals on 27 shots for the win.

Mike Richards had a goal and two assists for the Flyers, who had won five of six coming in. Braydon Coburn, Joffrey Lupul and Mike Knuble also tallied while Biron’s costly mistake saddled him with the loss after a 22-save performance.

Crosby was credited with the game-winning goal on a bizarre play with 2:45 left in the contest.

Biron dove between the circles to stop a scoring chance by Dupuis, but inexplicably dropped the puck behind him as he stood up. A Flyers defenseman overskated the puck, but Dupuis was there in the left circle to shove a pass ahead to the Penguins captain for a tip into an open net.

Richards missed a half-open net and a chance to tie with 90 seconds to play, and though Maxime Talbot missed the empty net with under 40 seconds left, the Flyers couldn’t get an equalizer as time ran out.

Lupul potted a backhander from the slot with 9:29 left in the first, then Crosby equalized on a wicked shot off the crossbar 21 seconds into the second period.

Malkin’s tip of a Petr Sykora deflection of a Sergei Gonchar shot led to a power-play goal and 2-1 Penguins lead at 7:14, then Fedotenko blew a shot home with 7:51 remaining for a 3-1 edge.

Richards brought the Flyers within 3-2 on another short-handed breakaway goal 3:07 into the third period. He set a team record with a goal while a man down for the third consecutive game, and tied Brian Propp and Mark Howe for most short-handed goals by a player in one season with seven.

It was a 3-3 game at the 6:37 mark when Matt Carle dished to Coburn for a blast at the right point which deflected off a Penguin stick and sailed over Fleury’s glove, but Fedotenko hit the net again at 9:50 to put Pittsburgh back on top.

A Simon Gagne-to-Richards-to Knuble passing series made it 4-4 with 5:35 to play.

Game Notes

Richards has three goals and five assists in his last two games…Propp accomplished the feat in 1984-85 and Howe in 1985-86…Pittsburgh had not won a road game since a 4-2 decision in Philly on January 13…The Penguins lead the season series, 4-1-0, with one final meeting on March 22 at Mellon Arena…Pittsburgh travels to Washington on Sunday and Philadelphia heads to America’s capital on Tuesday.

2/21-Saturday Morning Coffee

Posted on February 21st, 2009 by Buts

Steve Stamkos with the trick last week, welcome to the NHL kid.

Alexi Kovalev sent home for being Alexi Kovalev. Sending him home won’t work, Alexi is a flake you just have to deal with it.

Ain’t no party like a Kostitsyn brothers party because a Kostitsyn brother party don’t stop. Get those two with the Staal brothers and we have trouble.

Have you ever hit black ice while driving, I did Thursday and did a 540 in my car and ended up facing the wrong way in traffic.  Somehow I didn’t hit anybody and they didn’t hit me.

Molson has a beer called Black Ice that is 7% alcohol I believe, not to good IMO.

Funny how they say the NEW JERSEY Devils are New Yorks best team.

The NY Rangers replaced Jagr, Shanahan, Avery and Tyutin with Naslund, Zherdev and Redden. That’s 3 soft players replacing 3 hard nosed players and an elite talent. No wonder they suck and will miss the playoffs.

I wonder if all the cigarettes and beer that Carey Price has in his hands at the bar has anything to do with the glove in his hand during games that’s not working?

A-Roid shut up, just shut up. You took roids you loser.

Who gets traded Pronger or Niedermayer? I have no clue but it sounds like one of them is being moved.

Fantasy Corner

I hope you guys have been paying attention. Did you sell Patrick Sharp high when I told you too? He is a 60 point player max not the 80 point pace player he was 2 months ago.

Did you draft Conklin pre-season when I told you he’d be the #1 Detroit, Osgood is down in Grand Rapids right now.

Did you grab some Sens 2 weeks ago when I said they’d get hot?

Did you trade Simon Gagne 2 months ago when he was top 10 in scoring?

Ok pay attention here comes some more hockey pool gold for you.

Chris Campoli will become an offensive force in Ottawa

Olli Jokinen sucks right now and his value couldn’t be lower, I’m thinking he might get traded and you should trade for him now.

Danny Briere is about a week from coming back, Briere is a point a game guy and played stellar the last 20 games in 2008. Go grab him for cheap.

Paul Statsny is about to come back, try to sucker some owner into moving him to you.

Brodeur will be back and the Devils will go back into a defensive shell. I would move Langenbrunner and Elias but keep Parise.

If J-Bow gets traded I would look to grab the already good Keith Ballard, he’ll slide on to the #1 PP unit in Florida.

If you are in a keeper league trade for Peter Mueller, his value couldn’t be lower and he’s GOOD.

Have a great week end Hooligans.
