Jack Edwards Laughs Distastefully at Hit from Behind on Jones

Posted on March 31st, 2009 by The FlyerFly

As a Flyers fan, I’d love to punch Bruins announcer Jack Edwards square in the mouth for this shameful lack of concern for someone on the ice.  As a hockey fan, this embarrasses the hell out of me because this is the kind of crap that gives this sport a bad name.  If this meathead had had any perspective at all, he would understand that and not help perpetuate the problem.

All the hockey world has heard out of Boston about the Jones-Bergeron in the 2007 preseason has been that Jones should be strung up for his part in it.  Nevermind the intention or his concern for Bergeron’s health after the fact.

Well, as far as I’m concerned, the Bruins faithful who dont express disdain for a reaction like that can stick it.  It’s probably the most disgusting displays I’ve ever witnessed in live announcing.

Philadelphia, PA (Sports Network) – Tim Thomas made 45 saves and Mark Recchi picked up the game-winner early in the third period, as Boston clipped Philadelphia, 4-3, at Wachovia Center.

Milan Lucic added a pair of goals and Dennis Wideman also tallied for the Bruins, who have won three games in a row. Boston picked up its 48th win of the season and has 106 points, seven more than idle Washington and tops in the Eastern Conference.

Claude Giroux picked up a goal and assist for the Flyers, who launched a season-high 48 shots on goal but lost for the second time in their last six games.

Philadelphia still sits one point ahead of idle Carolina for fourth in the Eastern Conference.

Mike Richards and Simon Gagne lit the lamp and Antero Niittymaki took the loss after allowing four goals on 31 shots.

Recchi put the Bruins ahead by two with 4:21 played in the third period, a one-handed poke at a rebound which sailed over Niittymaki.

Gagne finally answered for the Flyers, shoving home a loose puck in the crease with 1:12 left in regulation, but that was as close as the home team got.

Giroux put the Flyers up 1-0 4:56 into the contest. Danny Briere dished to Arron Asham in the slot, and after his shot was turned away by Thomas, the rebound came right to the young winger for a tap-in.

Lucic drew Boston even with 9:21 left in the first, redirecting a cross-ice feed by Michael Ryder.

Wideman blasted a shot from the high slot for a 5-on-3 goal with 6:05 to play in the first, then Lucic tallied again inside three minutes left and the Bruins led 3-1 after one period.

Thomas made an acrobatic diving glove save to stone Scott Hartnell with the Bruins down two men early in the second period, but the Flyers drew within one at 17:49 as Richards deflected Ryan Parent’s point shot with the shaft of his stick while facing away from the net.

Game Notes

The clubs split the season series, 2-2-0, with each club winning twice on the road…The Flyers missed forward Riley Cote with an injured left finger, and called up forward Andreas Nodl from the Phantoms…The Bruins have won four straight and six of seven in Philadelphia dating back to January, 2006…Bruins forward Phil Kessel missed the game with an undisclosed injury.

Uniondale, NY (Sports Network) – Mike Richards notched the winner in the second round of the shootout, as the Philadelphia Flyers rallied from a two- goal third-period deficit to edge the New York Islanders, 4-3, at Nassau Coliseum.

Martin Biron foiled Frans Nielsen to open the second round before Richards tucked a shot off the right post and just beyond the right pad of Yann Danis. Biron then easily halted a weak shot from Mark Streit to end the game in the Flyers’ favor.

Joffrey Lupul tallied twice and Scott Hartnell once for the Flyers, who have won three of their last four games and remained in fourth place in the Eastern Conference with 92 points.

Following Pittsburgh’s win over the Rangers earlier Saturday and Carolina’s victory against New Jersey later Saturday, Philly moved one point ahead of the Hurricanes and two ahead of the Penguins.

Biron extended his personal winning streak over the Islanders to 11 games, making 30 saves.

Radek Martinek, Jeff Tambellini and Streit scored for the Islanders, who have dropped four of five and could not sustain the momentum from Friday’s surprise 2-0 win in Detroit.

Danis took the loss despite a 33-save performance.

The Islanders took a 1-0 lead with 5:48 to play in the first period. Nate Thompson won a left-circle draw to Tim Jackman, who dished back to Martinek for a shot which changed direction on its way to the back of the net.

New York looked poised to go up 2-0 with a power-play score from Nielsen at the first-period buzzer, but a review determined the puck did not cross the goal line before time expired.

Tambellini did provide a two-goal lead for the Isles, batting a puck out of mid-air while facing away from the net 3:03 into the second period.

The Flyers began the third period by wiping out their two-goal deficit in a little less than four minutes.

Lupul darted down the right wing from end-to-end and slipped a shot behind Danis at the 4:24 mark.

Hartnell tied the game at 6:38, alertly backhanding the rebound of Jeff Carter’s initial shot before Lupul lifted a backhander home on a breakaway at 7:58.

However, Streit followed Kyle Okposo’s rebound and tucked it between Biron’s pads for a 3-3 deadlock just 51 seconds later.

Despite six shots and spirited play, neither team could finish a chance in overtime.

Game Notes

The Flyers have won all five meetings this year, and have taken nine in a row and 12 of 13 from the start of last season…Lupul notched his 100th career tally. He has 43 in two seasons with Philadelphia…Okposo finished with two assists for the Islanders.

28/03-Saturday Morning Coffee

Posted on March 27th, 2009 by Buts

Happy Saturday you hooligans.

The weather is turning and that can only mean one thing…………….playoff hockey, best time of the year for a hockey fan.

Owen Nolan fought Colton Orr the other, say what you want Nolan wants to win and will do anything to win, nice cheap shot at the end as well.

With one more loss Cujo becomes the goalie with the most loses in NHL history, I find that weird.

Did you guys see the Tuukka Rask flip out? Stellar! They say Rask lacks emotion, I say bullcrap he LOST IT.

RollllllllllllllllllllllllllUp the rim at Timmy’s these days, I’m killin it with 8 free coffees and 6 free donuts, I’m saving the donuts to buy a 12 pack for the office.

What the hell is a Lady GaGa.

Leave it to the Flyers to sign some goalie nobody has ever heard of, God only knows.

Leafs love living in the abyss, another miss the playoffs and just miss the lottery as usual season. The last time the Leafs were in the playoffs Roenick ended the Leafs season with his OT goal as the Flyers choked the Leafs out yet again.

Flyers have played the Leafs 7 times in the playoffs, Flyers winning 6 of the series.

I had a sales call on Disco road this week, I love it. Fire in the Disco.

Mike Richards for the Selke? I think he has a shot.

Congrats to the great Emma Butler, she scored her first basket on a full size basket ball net! She’s 5 and weighs 39lbs, that’s a big shot for a little girl.

How about those Blue Jackets, wow the Hitch has them fired up.

Are the Caps a good team or do they just have 4 really good players and 16 hanger ons?

Have a great week end hooligans.

Philadelphia, PA (Sports Network) – Brett McLean and David Booth netted third- period goals as Florida held off Philadelphia, 4-2, at Wachovia Center.

Cory Stillman and Radek Dvorak also tallied for the Panthers, who halted a three-game losing streak and won for just the third time in 10 contests. Florida remained in ninth place in the Eastern Conference, two points out of a playoff berth after eight-seed Montreal topped Tampa Bay.

Craig Anderson stopped 40 shots to register his 13th win of the season.

“I think we’ve been playing pretty well, but we haven’t gotten the results,” said Anderson of his club, which had wasted late leads in setbacks to Columbus and Buffalo in the last week. “What other teams do is out of our control. If we do the best we can then we’ll see where the chips lay.”

Jeff Carter and Scott Hartnell provided offense for the Flyers, who saw their three-game win streak snapped. Philadelphia, the four-seed in the conference, failed to put more distance between itself and idle Carolina, which holds fifth place with 89 points, one behind the Flyers.

Martin Biron allowed three goals on 27 shots in defeat.

McLean converted a pass from Nick Boynton from a Flyers turnover for a 3-2 Panthers lead 2:38 into the third period.

From there, the Panthers did their best to get in the Flyers’ way for the remainder of regulation.

When Kimmo Timonen was sent off for interference with 2:15 to play, Philly kept pressing on offense with Biron pulled but Dvorak scored into the empty net with 32.5 seconds to go to ice the Florida victory.

“We’ve got to do a better job of getting in lanes and blocking shots,” Hartnell offered. “We have a couple games in hand on some teams but we have got to take control of our own destiny.”

Stillman deflected home Jay Bouwmeester’s floating point shot for a power-play score and 1-0 Florida lead with 8:35 left in the first period.

In a deliberately-paced second period, Hartnell had the best Flyer chance to tie the game but hit the post with over six minutes remaining, but Carter came right back to finish off a 2-on-1 with a wrister from the left wing at 14:07.

Only 23 seconds later, a Panthers’ odd-man rush resulted in Keith Ballard’s shot being kicked out by Biron right to Dvorak for a tap-in and 2-1 Florida edge.

Carter and Hartnell teamed up to tie the game with 3.8 seconds left in the period, as the former found a loose puck behind the net and dished back to the latter for a one-timer over Anderson’s glove.

Game Notes

Florida has won two of the three meetings this season, and has won four of the last five games in Philadelphia…Prior to the contest, the Flyers recalled defenseman Danny Syvret from the Phantoms under emergency conditions…The clubs play one more time this year, in Philadelphia, on April 7.

Philadelphia, PA (Sports Network) – Simon Gagne had a goal and two assists to lift the Philadelphia Flyers to a 4-2 win over the New Jersey Devils in an Atlantic Division battle at the Wachovia Center.

Danny Briere had a goal and an assist while Jeff Carter and Mike Knuble each scored for the Flyers, who have won three straight. Martin Biron made 32 saves in the win.

With the victory, the Flyers now have 90 points with a solid lock on the fourth spot in the Eastern Conference. Additionally, Philly still has an outside chance to grab the division, but it will be a tough battle as the team is seven points back of New Jersey. The Flyers have 10 games left while New Jersey has nine remaining.

“We really feel like we’re getting into a groove,” said Carter. “Coming down the stretch every game is huge, especially against our divisional teams.”

Philadelphia finished the game 3-for-3 on the power play and killed off seven of New Jersey’s eight power-play opportunities.

“One of the big things we went over in our team meeting this morning was quicker loose puck races,” said Philadelphia coach John Stevens. “Looking to shoot first and get our movement better than it’s been.”

Jamie Langenbrunner and Brendan Shanahan each had a goal for the Devils, who have dropped three of their last four games. Marty Brodeur stopped 21 shots in the loss.

“Special teams didn’t do what needed to be done,” said Devils coach Brent Sutter. “Our power play is not producing. We had many power-play opportunities tonight. To only get one goal out of it was not enough. And you can’t give up three power-play goals.”

With the score tied early in the third, Philly took the lead courtesy of the power play. Kimmo Timonen had the puck at the right point and let fly with a wrister that Carter was able to deflect past Brodeur just 55 seconds in for his 40th goal of the season.

A bit over two minutes later, the Flyers made it a 4-2 game. Gagne fed the puck to Claude Giroux, who appeared to be skating around the net from the left side. However, as he got to the back of the net he dished it behind his back to Gagne, who snapped it past a surprised Brodeur for his 30th goal of the year.

A few minutes after that, the Flyers’ penalty killers were put to work as Daniel Carcillo was called for a double minor on a high stick. They were able to keep the chances to a minimum over those four minutes to preserve the two- goal lead.

Philly had to kill off one more penalty in the game, as Matt Carle was called for delay of game after flipping the puck over the glass and again the PK came up with a big stop to help the team preserve the victory.

The Devils drew first blood just 9:42 into the game as Dainius Zubrus flung a pass from the right side of the net to the left, where it went off the skate of Shanahan and slid past Biron.

However, the Flyers answered on the power play later in the first. Gagne held the puck at the right boards and sent it to the high slot for Timonen, who fired a hard pass down to the right side of the net, where Briere redirected it past Brodeur with 4:03 left in the frame.

Philadelphia took a 2-1 lead on the power play at the 4:45 mark of the second period. Knuble picked up a loose puck in the slot with Devils all around him and slid it over to Briere at the left side. Knuble then charged to the left side and Briere threw it over. Knuble gathered the disc and wristed it into the net for his 26th goal of the season.

The Devils, though, were able to tie the game as Philadelphia took a string of penalties.

A too many men on the ice call led to a New Jersey power play that helped the team tie the game. Langenbrunner slid into the slot and fired home a rebound halfway though the second period.

New Jersey then had three consecutive power plays, but Philadelphia and Biron were able to kill all of them off to keep the game tied heading into the third period.

Game Notes

New Jersey left wing Patrik Elias sat out the game because of lower body soreness…The Flyers host Florida on Thursday…New Jersey plays in Chicago on Friday…Gagne has a goal in his last three games…Each team won three games in the series this season.

Pittsburgh, PA (Sports Network) – Martin Biron made 27 saves to lead the Philadelphia Flyers to a 3-1 victory over the Pittsburgh Penguins in an important Eastern Conference playoff race matchup at the Igloo.

Simon Gagne and Scott Hartnell scored power-play goals for the Flyers, who have won two in a row after losing three of their previous four and moved two points ahead of Pittsburgh in the race for fourth place in the East.

Kris Letang netted the lone goal for Pittsburgh, which had a three-game win streak stopped. The Penguins have 86 points and the Flyers now have 88 in the race for home-ice advantage in the first round of the playoffs.

Marc-Andre Fleury made 17 saves in defeat, as the Penguins failed to register a point for the first time in 13 games (10-1-2). Pittsburgh’s last loss in regulation came in a 5-2 setback at Washington on February 22.

Gagne gave Philadelphia a 1-0 lead just 5:19 into the contest with his 29th goal of the season, as he picked up a loose puck in the left circle and beat Fleury on the power play. Hartnell’s 27th goal of the season just 2:54 into the second period made it 2-0.

Biron was outstanding for the remainder of the stanza, turning aside all 11 Penguin shots. A number of saves were of the spectacular variety.

Tyler Kennedy was unable to penetrate Biron with a point-blank chance from the low right circle just a few seconds after Hartnell’s goal and the Flyer netminder made two dynamite saves soon after, one diving across the goal mouth with the shaft of his stick.

The Penguins finally beat Biron midway through the third on a power play. Sidney Crosby pulled the puck out of a scrum in the right corner and skated toward the net before sending a pass across the top of the crease for an onrushing Letang, who buried a shot into the empty side of the cage for his eighth goal of the season.

Pittsburgh failed to generate much of an offensive threat afterward and Biron’s best save down the stretch came when he kicked out the left pad to deny Jordan Staal from the slot with 2:42 remaining.

Pittsburgh pulled Fleury with 40 seconds to play and Darroll Powe found the empty net with 27.2 seconds left to seal it.

Game Notes

Hartnell added an assist…Evgeni Malkin picked up an assist for Pittsburgh and leads the NHL with 105 points…The Flyers were 2-for-7 on the power play, while the Penguins scored once on four chances with the extra skater…The Penguins had been 7-0-1 in their last eight home games since a 3-0 setback to Detroit on February 8.

Canucks Score on Themselves

Posted on March 22nd, 2009 by The FlyerFly

Talk about a weird goal.  Not only did the Canucks drop a deuce-bomb against the lowly Coyotes in the midst of a playoff race, but they managed to score on their own empty net during a delayed penalty call.

And to make the circumstances even more odd, Viktor Tikhonov was the player to be penalized at the next whistle, and the last Phoenix player to touch the puck. There was some talk during the game about trying to find out if anything like that had ever happened before.  However, I don’t know if anything more ever came of it.  I would guess that it would be pretty tough to dig something like that out of the history books.

But for Flyers fans, this has to be eerily reminiscent of a somewhat similar goal from back in the day, as forum member “fazed” so clearly recalled,

http://flyerflies.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=48464#p48464

“I went to see the flyers play the devils in n.j. a looong time ago (2/15/2000) and this happened to the flyers (not the part about the guy getting penalized scoring the goal, however).

Langkow coughed up the puck when he was checked and it went right into the net that was vacated because there was a delayed penalty call on the devils. the worst part is that brodeur was the last n.j. player to touch the puck so he got credit for that goal and it turned out to be the game winning goal.

The delayed penalty call was on Scott Stevens, so the same person didn’t score that committed the penalty, but I don’t remember a goalie having a game winning goal ever…”
