Washington, DC (Sports Network) – Alexander Semin returned to the lineup and notched the game-winning goal in the third period, as Washington extended its winning streak to five games with a 4-2 win over Philadelphia at Verizon Center.
Semin, who missed the last two games with an illness, picked up his seventh goal on the year and had two assists, sparking a slumping power play by setting up a Nicklas Backstrom tally on the man advantage. Backstrom added three assists, including a set up of an Alex Ovechkin score. The Russian superstar also added an empty-net tally to take the league lead with 11 goals.
Jose Theodore made 41 saves for the Capitals, whose current win streak comes on the heels of a four-game slide, which began when Philadelphia notched a 6-5 overtime win over visiting Washington on October 6.
Scott Hartnell and Braydon Coburn scored power-play goals for the Flyers, who had a brief two-game win streak halted with Sunday’s 4-1 home loss to San Jose. Ray Emery turned back 32-of-35 shots in the setback.
Semin gained the Flyers’ zone just past the five-minute mark of the third, skated into the left circle and simply ripped a shot over Emery’s right shoulder to give the Caps a 3-2 lead.
Darroll Powe was awarded a penalty shot a short time later after being taken down from behind, but fired low into the pads of Theodore from in close at 6:47.
Theodore stood tall with 20 third-period saves to allow Semin’s goal to stand up and Ovechkin scored into an empty net with 46 ticks left to seal the outcome.
The goaltenders kept things scoreless moving to the second period, where Philadelphia took a 2-0 lead by capitalizing with the man advantage. Hartnell took a cross-ice feed from Mike Richards at the lower left circle for a one- timer that screamed past Theodore for a 1-0 lead at 3:06.
Coburn then found the back of the net at 14:29 with a slap shot before the Caps scored twice in the final 3:52 of the period to tie the game. Ovechkin got things started, taking a pass from Backstrom and beating Emery top shelf over the left shoulder.
A little over two minutes later, Semin set up Backstrom with a pass from the left corner for a one-timer that snuck by Emery to tie the game.
