Philadelphia, PA (Sports Network) – Roberto Luongo stopped all 38 shots he faced for his second shutout of the season as Vancouver shut down Philadelphia, 3-0, at Wachovia Center.
Willie Mitchell, Alex Burrows and Christian Ehrhoff tallied for the Canucks, who have won four of five and blanked Philadelphia on the road for the first time in franchise history.
Brian Boucher yielded all three goals on 29 shots for the Flyers, who suffered through their second consecutive scoreless contest, their third straight defeat and sixth loss in seven contests.
Vancouver had a potential first goal wiped out due to a high stick with 4:27 left in the opening period. In a scoreless first 20 minutes, each team hit the post twice.
The clubs traded close calls throughout the second period until Mitchell managed to lift a backhander over a prone Boucher with 6:22 left for a 1-0 Canucks lead.
Both Sedins teamed up for a 2-0 Vancouver edge at 17:28, with Henrik feeding Daniel for a shot that caromed off Burrows in front and hit the back of the net.
Ehrhoff’s blast from the bottom of the right circle trickled through the arm and body of Boucher with 3:19 left in regulation and the visitors walked away with the three-goal margin.
Luongo got stronger as the game wore on, making nine relatively easy saves in the first period, then 14 stops in the second, including a pair on Jeff Carter and two more on Arron Asham.
Though the Flyers peppered the net with chances near and far in the third, Luongo was equal each time, finishing with 15 saves.
Game Notes
Richard Brodeur provided the Canucks’ only other shutout win over the Flyers, on January 27, 1984, a 4-0 blanking in Vancouver…The last time the Flyers failed to score in back-to-back games came on February 10-12, 2003, both against Minnesota.
