Philadelphia, PA (Sports Network) – Three days after it was announced goaltender Antero Niittymaki will be sidelined for the next four-to-six weeks following surgery on his left hip, the Philadelphia Flyers on Thursday signed veteran netminder Jean-Sebastien Aubin to a one-year contract.
Per club policy, financial terms were not disclosed.
“Jean-Sebastien is a veteran goalie with quality NHL experience,” said Flyers general manager Paul Holmgren. “We feel his experience, along with his ability as a goaltender, makes him an ideal fit for our organization.”
The 31-year-old Aubin played in 19 games last season for the Los Angeles Kings and went 5-6-1 with a 3.19 goals-against average and .886 save percentage. He was dealt to Anaheim on February 26, but did not appear in any games for the Ducks, instead posting a 6-4-0 mark and a sparkling 1.67 GAA in 11 games with the American Hockey League’s Portland Pirates.
“I’m happy to come to a great organization like the Flyers,” said Aubin. “I know a lot of the guys on the team. They have a lot of faith in me and it is a really good fit for me to come here.”
Originally selected by Pittsburgh in the third round (76th overall) of the 1995 NHL Entry Draft, Aubin has compiled an 80-83-11-5 record, 2.93 GAA, .900 save percentage and seven shutouts in 218 career games with the Penguins, Maple Leafs and Kings.
