Philadelphia, PA (Sports Network) – Jeff Carter scored with 1:16 left in overtime as the Philadelphia Flyers swept a home-and-home set against the New Jersey Devils with a 3-2 win at the Wachovia Center.

Shortly after Simon Gagne almost ended the game and a noxious substance was thrown on the ice, resulting in a delay of several minutes, Ossi Vaananen threw a shot on net from the right point that Carter tipped past Martin Brodeur as he was falling to the ice.

Mike Knuble and Scott Hartnell each scored for the Flyers, who got their first win of the season and first win in 12 tries in New Jersey on Friday with a 6-3 victory at Prudential Center. Martin Biron stopped 29 shots in the win.

Brian Gionta and Zach Parise each had a goal for the Devils, who had won three straight prior to the two-game set with Philadelphia. Brodeur stopped 30 shots in the loss.

About halfway through the opening frame the Flyers took the lead. From the left side of the net, Knuble stuffed the puck past Brodeur on a wraparound attempt for a 1-0 advantage.

Biron stopped all eight shots thrown his way in the first period.

The Devils, though, struck just 27 seconds into the second. Colin White threw a shot on net from the left point that Zach Parise skilfully tipped past Biron from the slot for his sixth goal of the season.

Philadelphia got the lead back at the 9:40 mark. The team had an extended period of time in the Devils end and Brodeur came up with several big saves. However, Braydon Coburn blasted a shot from the left point that Carter deflected on net. Brodeur came up with the save, but Hartnell was parked at the right side of the net and slammed the puck home for a 2-1 game.

New Jersey again tied the game with a power-play goal late in the second. A scrum behind the net resulted in Dainius Zubrus getting the puck and firing a pass to an uncovered Gionta, who went to the backhand and got the puck past Biron from the left side of the crease with 1:43 remaining.

Both teams had their chances to score in the third period, but Brodeur stopped all seven shots he faced and Biron made six saves to force overtime.

Game Notes:

Parise and Carter both have a four-game goal streak…Philadelphia plays in Atlanta on Tuesday…New Jersey has off until Wednesday when it will host Toronto…The game had four fights…Brodeur has 543 wins in his career and remains eight wins shy of Patrick Roy’s NHL record…Despite the loss, New Jersey has won eight of 12 and 16 of the last 21 regular-season meetings between the clubs, but have now dropped three straight to the Flyers…New Jersey went 1-for-5 on the power play while Philadelphia finished 0-for-4.
