Philadelphia, PA (Sports Network) – Ales Hemsky picked up three points on two goals and one assist as Edmonton held on to top Philadelphia, 5-4, at the Wachovia Center.

Erik Cole, Dustin Penner and Sheldon Souray also tallied for the Oilers, who have won two in a row after losing five straight. Defenseman Tom Gilbert picked up three helpers and fellow backliner Ladislav Smid added a pair of assists.

Dwayne Roloson made 22 saves for the win, his second in as many days.

Simon Gagne and Mike Knuble registered a goal and assist each for the Flyers, whose four-game win streak came to an end.

Martin Biron took the loss after allowing five goals on 28 shots.

Gagne’s shot around a goalmouth scramble 20 seconds into the third cut the Oilers’ lead to 5-4, but the club was constantly frustrated by the Edmonton defense and Roloson’s reflexes.

Biron was called to the bench for an extra attacker with roughly 90 seconds to play but a penalty to Kimmo Timmonen with one minute to go negated the advantage. Edmonton held the puck for most of the final 60 seconds and hung on for the victory.

The Oilers got on the board 9:10 into the contest as Ethan Moreau passed to Cole for a one-timer that beat Biron to the short side.

Knuble tapped a loose puck home for a power-play tally with 9:08 left in the first to tie the game. The score was his sixth in the last five games, tying a career-high goal-scoring streak.

Edmonton went up 2-1 with 7:33 remaining as Hemsky slipped up the slot and slid a backhander past Biron. Hemsky used the same moves for his second goal of the contest 4:26 into the second for a 3-1 lead.

Braydon Coburn’s sizzling one-timer from the right point brought the Flyers within 3-2 on the man advantage at 8:10, but Souray answered on an Edmonton advantage at 10:21 to restore the visitors’ two-goal edge.

Penner stuffed home a rebound with 8:08 to play and the Oilers opened up a 5-2 lead but Jeff Carter wristed home Philly’s third power-play goal of the game at 18:43.
Game Notes
