Uniondale, NY (Sports Network) – Mike Richards’ tally just past the midway point of the third period was the game-winner as Philadelphia nipped the New York Islanders, 3-1, at Nassau Coliseum.
Danny Briere and Kimmo Timmonen also scored for the Flyers, who broke a three- game losing streak.
Martin Biron made 35 saves to improve his record to 4-5-1 on the season.
Trent Hunter provided the lone goal for the Islanders, who have dropped three in a row. Joey MacDonald fell to 4-6-2 despite stopping 29-of-31 shots.
The Flyers picked up some breathing room with 9:09 left in regulation on a short-handed goal. Simon Gagne and Richards broke in 2-on-1, and after McDonald got his pad on the initial shot, Richards slammed in the rebound from the edge of the left circle for a 2-0 lead.
New York finally responded when Hunter’s right-wing blast trickled through Biron with 3:40 left in regulation, but Timmonen iced the game with a backhander from his own blue line into the empty net inside the final five seconds.
The Islanders carried play for much of the first period, and outshot the Flyers 15-10 in a scoreless 20 minutes.
In the second period, Philly survived a two-man shorthanded situation for a full two minutes when Briere and Mike Knuble were sent off, then were rewarded when Briere launched a shot from the right circle past McDonald at 13:40.
Biron stopped all 13 shots he faced to preserve the one-goal lead.
