Raleigh, NC (Sports Network) – Jeff Carter scored with 1:26 left in overtime to help the Philadelphia Flyers to a 2-1 victory over the Carolina Hurricanes at RBC Center.

With the puck in the Carolina end, Carter squared off against Rod Brind’Amour at the right faceoff circle and battled for the puck. He eventually got it away from Brind’Amour and snapped a quick shot on net that got past Michael Leighton for the win.

Carter is tied with Buffalo’s Thomas Vanek for the league-lead in goals with 19.

Mike Richards scored the other goal on an assist from Simon Gagne while Antero Niittymaki stopped 35 shots in the win for the Flyers, who had lost three of four coming into the game.

Sergei Samsonov scored the lone goal while Leighton finished the game with 29 saves for the Hurricanes, who have dropped three straight and six of seven overall.

The Hurricanes got the first power play of the game, but it was Philadelphia that scored on Carolina’s man advantage.

With Aaron Asham in the box for roughing, Gagne dug out the puck in the neutral zone along the left boards and sent a lead pass to Richards, who skated in on net and slipped a backhander past Leighton for a 1-0 lead at the 3:59 mark of the first.

Niittymaki was busy in the first period as he had to make 11 saves and help kill off four power plays in the frame.

Neither side scored in the second period as Niittymaki stopped eight shots while Leighton turned aside 14 discs.

On the power play in the third period, Carolina tied the game. Joni Pitkanen fired a pass from the top of the left circle that hit off the stick of a Flyer, but it went right to Ray Whitney at the right circle. Whitney then snapped the puck back to the low left circle where Samsonov fired it into the net just 55 seconds into the third.

Leighton stopped eight shots in the third period to force the overtime.

Game Notes
