Philadelphia, PA (Sports Network) – Tyler Kennedy scored the first of four consecutive Pittsburgh goals, as the Penguins doubled up the Philadelphia Flyers, 4-2, at the Wachovia Center.

Evgeni Malkin, Jordan Staal and Matt Cooke had a goal apiece for the Penguins, who came into Philadelphia having lost two in a row and seven of their last eight. Pittsburgh not only snapped the two-game slide, but also snapped a five-game losing streak in Philadelphia and handed the Flyers their first regulation home loss since November 8.

Marc-Andre Fleury stopped 27-of-29 shots in the win.

Joffrey Lupul and Mike Knuble had the goals for Philadelphia, which had been 12-0-2 since that Nov. 8 loss to Tampa Bay. Martin Biron gave up all four goals on 26 shots for the Flyers, who had earned at least a point in their previous six games (4-0-2).

The Flyers got on the scoreboard first thanks to a fluke play in the opening period. Forward Simon Gagne had the puck in the neutral zone and sent it deep around the left boards, while Fleury went to meet it behind the net. But, instead of stopping it, Fleury’s stick rolled the puck on its edge, then sent it flying, caroming off the back of the net and into the empty crease. Knuble got to the puck first and sent it into the wide-open cage at 7:36 for a 1-0 lead.

But later in the first, Kennedy tied the game, starting a string of four consecutive Penguins goals that gave the visitors control of the game. A quick pass from the left boards to the slot hit off one stick and fell in front of Kennedy, who swiped a backhander past a diving Biron with 3:13 remaining in the frame.

Then, just 1:42 into the middle period, Sidney Crosby backhanded a pass to the slot for Malkin, who fired it high over Biron to put Pittsburgh in front.

Staal made it a 3-1 game with 7:35 left in the second when he broke out on a solo rush after catching the Flyers in a slow line change, then lifted a backhander over Biron’s glove.

Late in the middle stanza, Crosby scooped up the puck behind the net after a shot went wide of the left post and skated around to the right side. He threw the puck out front, and Cooke was there to slam it in with only 25.8 seconds on the clock, boosting the Pens’ lead to 4-1.

Lupul got the Flyers back within two at the 8:07 mark of the third period, rifling a shot from the right circle off the right post and past Fleury. But Philadelphia never got closer as Pittsburgh held on for the win.

Game Notes

The Flyers were dealt just their second regulation loss this season when scoring first (17-2-5)…Pittsburgh has won three of the four matchups this season with Philadelphia, and six of eight overall…The Pens went 0-for-4 on power plays, while the Flyers were 0-for-1.
