St. Petersburg, FL (Sports Network) – Mike Smith stopped 31 shots to help the Tampa Bay Lightning to a 4-1 win over the Philadelphia Flyers at St. Pete Times Forum.
Martin St. Louis, Andrej Meszaros and Ryan Craig each had a goal for the Lightning, who have won three of their last four games.
Vincent Lecavalier, who has been the subject of trade rumors, also had a goal for Tampa Bay.
Joffrey Lupul scored the lone goal while Martin Biron gave up four goals on 44 shots for the Flyers, who have lost two consecutive games.
Philadelphia took a 1-0 lead on the power play as Jeff Carter sent a short pass from the left boards to the left circle for a skating Lupul, who skated a bit further and snapped a high backhand over the right shoulder of Smith at the 5:21 mark of the second period.
However, Tampa Bay scored three times in a little over two minutes to take the lead.
The first goal came when Steven Stamkos sent a turnaround pass from the left circle to the right where St. Louis used a heavy wrister to beat Biron with 5:12 left in the second.
Randy Jones took a tripping penalty just moments later to set up Tampa’s next goal. After a left circle faceoff win, Ryan Malone eventually got the puck and from the top of the left circle sent it across the ice for Meszaros, whose one-timer made it past Biron just 25 seconds after St. Louis’ goal.
A bit later, Matt Pettinger’s wrist shot from the right circle was stopped, but Craig was on the doorstep to slam home the rebound for a 3-1 lead.
Lecavalier sealed the win with a penalty shot goal as he slipped a backhander between the pads of Biron with 7:26 to play in the game.
Game Notes
Philadelphia defenseman Kimmo Timonen left the game with 9:47 to play in the first as blood was pouring from his nose after getting hit with a deflection during a Flyers power play.
