Philadelphia, PA (Sports Network) – Manny Malhotra scored two quick goals in the second period to help the San Jose Sharks close out a six-game road trip with a 4-1 victory over the Philadelphia Flyers.
Malhotra went his last 18 regular season games without scoring a goal before Sunday’s win, which helped the Sharks finish their trip with a 4-2-0 record. San Jose also extended its unbeaten streak over the Flyers to 10 games.
Dany Heatley and Jed Ortmeyer also scored, while Thomas Greiss stopped 37 shots to earn his first win of the season.
Darroll Powe scored the only goal for the Flyers, who have lost four of six. Brian Boucher allowed four goals on 28 shots in his first start of the season.
The Sharks struck first with a power play goal in the first period. The puck got caught in between Boucher’s skates, and Heatley jammed away at it with his stick until it popped free and into the net at the 6:20 mark.
The Flyers tied the game three minutes later on Powe’s one-timer from the slot that beat Greiss.
Malhotra, though, gave San Jose a two-goal lead with two scores in a 2:14 span in the second period. The first goal came as a bit of a fluke, as Malhotra flipped the puck toward the crease only to hit a Flyers defenseman and Boucher’s stick before finding the back of the net.
His second goal was a bit more conventional, as Malhotra found a loose puck in the offensive zone and fired a wrist shot from the right circle that flew above Boucher’s left shoulder and into the net at 10:05 for a 3-1 lead.
In the closing minutes, Ortmeyer fired a quick wrister from the left circle that snuck past Boucher to account for the final margin.
Game Notes
The Flyers haven’t beaten the Sharks since December 21, 2000, as they are 0-7-0 with two ties in that span…San Jose’s Joe Thornton had an assist, marking the seventh straight game against the Flyers that he has recorded a point…Sharks forward Patrick Marleau had two assists, giving him 10 points in five games.
