Great Moments In Flyers History

The Flyers Win Their First Stanley Cup -
May 19, 1974 at The Spectrum
Vs. the Boston Bruins

The dreams and aspirations of every Flyers player on the ice came true on one day in Philadelphia. The Flyers defeated the mighty Bobby Orr and his Boston Bruins in Game 6 of the Stanley Cup Finals to become the first NHL expansion team to win hockey's holy grail. For many, seeing a team other than the one of the league's original six win the Cup was nothing short of surreal, but for Philadelphia fans, it was pure ecstasy.

The Flyers started their championship year off with a bang. At their home opener, Bernie Parent was welcomed back to the Flyers after a short absence, the fans were pumped about a new season, and Kate Smith made a surprise appearance at the Spectrum before the game to perform "God Bless America." The season was off to one hell of a start, but no one really knew what the year would bring. During that year, Bernie Parent emerged as the NHL's premier goaltender, posting a terrific 1.89 GAA, and and 12 shutouts, just shy of the NHL record. Bobby Clarke also had an incredible season, as he continued to establish himself as one of the world's elite players.

Once the playoffs came around, Rick MacLeish stepped up to the challenge and scored 22 points through the 1974 playoff run. The Flyers were determined to make good on their 112 reglar season points. They came into the first round to face the Atlanta Flames, and swept them convincingly in 4 games. Then, they would have their hands full, as they moved to the Semis against the New York Rangers. The Rangers would push the Flyers to a deciding seventh game, but the Flyers proceeded to the Finals against Boston. The Bruins had the Flyers on the ropes early by winning Game 1, but the Flyers were able to pull out a 3-2 OT win in Game 2 to tie the Series. The Flyers then proceeded to win the next two games in more convincing fashion, 4-1 and 4-2, respectively. Suddenly, the Bruins were on the brink of elimination, and they responded accordingly. A 5-1 pounding humbled the Flyers and ultimately prepared them for their second chance at clinching the Cup in Game 6.

Game 6 turned out to be a tight checking game by the Flyers, and was a story of one goal. Rick MacLeish scored the one and only goal the Flyers would need at 14:48 of the first period. It came on a tip of an Andre Dupont shot, and Boston Bruins goalie Gilles Gilbert wasn't ready for the redirection. As the clock ticked down, no one lapsed in their coverage, and the Flyers actually shed much of their typical brawling, bruising play in favor of smart, two man forechecking. Parent, who won the Conn Smythe Trophy as playoff MVP, was brilliant and frustrated the opposition when they did manage to break through the neutral zone.

And so it was...the Flyers brought home the Stanley Cup on the broad shoulders of players like Bobby Clarke, Bernie Parent, Bill Barber, Rick MacLeish, and Gary Dornhoefer. Using his infamous blackboard, Coach Fred Shero said to his team before the game, "Win together today, and we will walk together forever." Just hours later, the Philadelphia Flyers were Stanley Cup Champions.
