Ron Hextall Becomes The First Goaltender In NHL History To Score A Goal - December 8, 1987 |
|
During a game against the Boston Bruins, Ron Hextall made his mark on the history books by becoming the first goaltender to ever score a goal by actually shooting the puck into the net. The Flyers were already up by two goals when the Bruins decided to pull their goalie to try to get back into the game in the last few minutes. Hextall, who had always been well regarded for his puck handling ability, went behind the net to gather the puck when he realized that he had open ice in front of him. Hextall, as he said, "was just trying to get the puck close." But he would do more than just get close, as his wristshot sailed down the ice and rolled into the open net at 18:48 of the third period. Hextall, who was jumping up and down in front of his goal, was met by his amazed teammates for congratulations. Even the legendary Flyers announcer, Gene Hart, seemed stunned by what had happened. Noone in the long and storied history of the NHL had accomplished what Hextall had, and it was figured that noone ever would again. That was, of course, until Hextall shocked everyone again. During the 1989 playoffs, Hextall would shock everyone once again by scoring yet another goal, this time against the Washington Capitals. While it had been unheard of for a goalie to enter the goals stat sheet, Hextall showed that with his superior stickwork and puck handling, anything was possible not once, but twice. Although Ron Hextall is known and admired for his play and dedication as a Flyer for the majority of his career, he will also be remembered just as fondly for treating the Flyers and their fans to such an unusual moment in hockey history. |
