The Flyers Repeat As Stanley Cup Champions - May 27, 1975 in Buffalo Vs. the Buffalo Sabres |
|
Just a little more than a full year after winning their first Stanley Cup, Bobby Clarke, Bernie Parent, and the rest of the "Broad Street Bullies" found themselves right back on top of the hockey world. By defeating the Sabres in 6 games, the Flyers validated themselves as a true powerhouse in the league... not just some fly by night champion that got lucky the first time around as some felt. Although some of the league's traditionalists were still uneasy with the Cup being anywhere other than the original six NHL cities, the Flyers were forcing them to come to grips with the emerging new era in pro hockey. The Flyers actually improved on their previous season's point total with 113 points, and were every bit as impressive as they were the year before. However, in their Cup defense, they also had a new offensive weapon. Reggie Leach became a new sensation for the Flyers, as he scored 45 goals and 33 assists in his first year with the Flyers. Bernie Parent went the extra mile to prove the fact that he was the real deal by posting another stellar statiscal season. The same core of players played along with Leach and Parent, and the Flyers headed back into the playoffs with a vengence. Just as they did the year before against the Atlanta Flames, the Flyers tore through the first round in 4 games, this time leaving the Toronto Maple Leafs in their wake. But, the Flyers found another second round test from a New York based squad for the second straight year. This time around it would be the Islanders instead of the Rangers, and the Islanders managed to put quite a scare into the Philly faithful by coming back from a 3-0 deficit to force a 7th game. The Flyers were able to win that 7th game in convincing fashion by a 4-1 score. In the Finals, the Flyers had to face the Buffalo Sabres, another team who had entered the league just a few short years earlier. The Sabres had only been in the league since 1970, but had already established themselves as a force and tied the Flyers and Canadiens for the league's best point total in the 1974-75 season with 113. The Flyers were able to jump out to an early 2-0 series lead, and seemed to be in control of the series. That was until the Sabres came back to take the next two. Suddenly, the Flyers found thamselves in the middle of a true battle to repeat. However, they were able to assert themselves in Game 5 by putting a beating on Buffalo by the score of 5-1. In Game 6, the Flyers truly had to lean on Lady Luck, and the shoulders of Bernie Parent. The Sabres had plenty of chances, but found puck after puck either going just wide, or barely being stopped by Parent. All along though, the Flyers showed disipline and played the Shero way. Two goals by the Flyers was enough to seal the deal and bring the Cup back to the City of Brotherly Love. The Philadelphia Flyers and their fans look fondly upon the two Stanley Cup Championships as the pinnacle of the organization's success. To this day, Philadelphia is waitng for the Cup to come back to the Flyers, and each October brings a renewed sense that maybe, just maybe, this will be the year the Flyers start a new era of dominant Philly style hockey with a Stanley Cup Championship. |
