Preseason Game #8 http://flyers.nhl.com/team/app?gameNumber=97&gameType=1&page=Recap&season=20072008&service=page PHILADELPHIA - Marc Staal broke a 2-2 tie when his shot trickled off of goaltender Martin Biron and inches across the goal line late in the game, as the New York Rangers defeated the Philadelphia Flyers 3-2 in preseason action at the Wachovia Center on Saturday night. Staal's goal with just 1:11 remaining in the game was the only even-strength goal of the contest. With the loss, Philadelphia finished with a 3-5-0 record in the preseason. The Flyers open the regular season with three straight road games on October 4 in Calgary; October 6 in Edmonton; and October 10 in Vancouver. The home opener is on Saturday, October 13 against the New York Islanders. A couple of goals on the two-man advantage resulted in Philadelphia leading 2-1 at the second intermission. New York opened the scoring with a power play goal at 7:15 of the second period, when Brandon Dubinsky got the rebound of a bouncing puck and poked it past Biron. The Flyers responded, though, when Thomas Pock and Jaromir Jagr were whistled for consecutive penalties midway through the frame. Shortly thereafter, Mike Richards' rising slap shot on a one-timer from Kimmo Timonen beat goaltender Henrik Lundqvist to tie the game. Simon Gagne's laser from just below the faceoff dot on another feed from Timonen with 92 seconds left in the period gave Philadelphia its first lead of the game. Danny Briere assisted on both Flyers goals. Nigel Dawes' deflection of a Paul Mara shot on the power play tied the game in the third period. Although it was just the preseason, the teams were in mid-season form as far as the physical play. Richards drilled Jagr behind the Flyers net early in the game, leading to Chris Drury engaging him for a fight while there was a scrum still going on behind the net. Later, Jason Smith fought with both Colton Orr and Brendan Shanahan after big hits along the boards, while Riley Cote and Jason Strudwick dropped the gloves in the second period. With the game tied 2-2 late in the third, Philadelphia's Ben Eager hammered Staal and Ryan Hollweg along the boards. Hollweg responded later that same shift by hitting Nate Guenin and Lasse Kukkonen, the latter of which resulted in a minor for charging. The Flyers, though, were unable to capitalize.
