EDMONTON - The Philadelphia Flyers decided to part ways with Joni Pitkanen and Geoff Sanderson this summer, but the two current Edmonton Oilers got the best of their former team on Saturday night by scoring goals and helping their new team earn a 5-3 win at home at Rexall Place.
Sanderson registered two goals, while Pitkanen tallied the game-winner.
Pitkanen and Sanderson were sent to the Oilers on July 1st by the Flyers in exchange for defenseman Jason Smith and forward Joffrey Lupul.
Although Pitkanen was credited with the Oilers' 4th goal of the night just 1:10 into the 3rd period, the goal was actually more a result of a mistake by Flyers forward Mike Knuble than a big play by Pitkanen. Knuble followed an Edmonton rush into the Flyers zone and attempted to stop too late in front of Philly netminder Martin Biron to avoid kicking a shot rebound right into the net. Knuble was visibly upset by the turn of events, and it eventually was credited as the game-winner.
Both of Sanderson's goals came with just seconds to go in each of the last 2 periods. The first went in with less than 5 seconds remaining in the 2nd period, and the other was an empty netter with 12 seconds left to go in the contest.
Simon Gagne, Mike Knuble, and Jeff Carter provided the Flyers goals.
The Flyers got off to a shaky start, as Edmonton dominated the vast majority of the 1st period and outshot Philly 16-4. Martin Biron made one solid save after another, however, to keep the Flyers in the game.
One particular save stood out about 9 minutes into the 1st period. Biron was caught out of position as Andrew Cogliano came across the crease unchallenged. It was all Biron could do to sprawl out and cover the low spots with an outstretched leg, and Cogliano couldn't get the puck up in the air enough to get the puck by.
But the Flyers did much better in the 2nd period, actually outshooting the Oilers 15-8 despite not being able to finish the 2nd with the lead. Sanderson's first goal of the night erased the 3-2 lead late in the 2nd.
Steve Staios and Dustin Penner scored the other 2 Edmonton goals.
Biron finished the night with 29 saves, while new Oilers starter Mathieu Garon had 22 saves of his own for the win.
The Flyers are now 1-1 after their first two games of the regular season, and willhead off on a team-building excursion over the next few days before facing the Vancouver Canucks on the 10th.
