VANCOUVER - If the Philadelphia Flyers were looking to build momentum off their time atop the mountains of Whistler, British Columbia, they couldn't have asked for much more.

That is, of course, unless you count Jesse Boulerice.

Danny Briere wrote himself into the record books in just his 3rd game with the team with his goal and 2 assists, and Mike Richards added the final two Flyers goals as the Flyers rolled over the Vancover Canucks 8-2 on Wednesday night at GM Place.

A stellar 20 minute performance by the Flyers overallin their first game after their 3 day team-building excursion in the Canadian mountains was marred by yet another ugly incident perpetrated by a Flyers enforcer.

Jesse Boulerice was a free agent signee coming out of camp, and had impressed with his energy level, but that energy went overboard when he blasted Canucks forward Ryan Kesler in the head with a two-handed crosscheck just to the left of the Philadelphia net duringthe 3rd period. Kesler stayed down for quite awhile, but got to his skates and left under his own power. However, he did not return.

It was the second such incident for the Flyers since the start of the preseason. Steve Downie is currently serving a 20 game suspension for leaping into a shoulder check that caught Ottawa forward Dean McAmmond in the head and caused a concussion back during their preseason contest on September 25th.

The league will no doubt be looking at this penalty as well, as Boulerice was served a match penalty and a 5 minute roughing major.

Otherwise, it was a memorable and dominating performance from end to end for the Flyers, who extended their unbeaten streak in Vancouver to 6 games, stretching all the way back to January of 1989.

With his 3 point game, Briere became the first Flyer in team history to score 2 or more points in each of his first 3 games in the orange and black.

Meanwhile, Richards had his 1st career 4 point game, and his 2nd two goal game.

Jeff Carter got the scoring started for the Flyers at 8:48 of the 1st period when Randy Jones wristed a quick shot at the pads of Vancouver goalie Roberto Luongo. Carter was in just the right spot to fire the rebound back at the net before Luongo could recover and regiater his 2nd goal of the season.

Then, R.J. Umberger increased the Flyers lead to 2-0 just 13 seconds later when he and Mike Richards broke into the Canucks' zone right off the center ice faceoff. Richards came down the right side and backhanded a pass through the slot for a one-timer that Luongo never had a chance at. It was Umberger's first goal of the season, and his first appearance for the Flyers since the preseason, when he broke the pinky finger on his right hand.

Vancouver did reduce the lead to a goal just over a minute later when Ryan Shannon took advantage of a beautiful passing play by Vancover's Sedin twins, Henrik and Daniel. But that would be as close to the Flyers as the Canucks would get all night long.

Simon Gagne and Briere would each score in the 1st period as well to take a 4-1 lead into the locker room. The Flyers also outshot the Canucks 13-6 in the 1st period and chased Luongo out of the net as Curtis Sanford came in to start the 2nd.

But Sanford would not fare much better.

Joffrey Lupul would victimize Sanford just 1:24 into the 2nd period with his 1st goal as a Flyer. Richards left a nifty drop pass for Umberger as they charged into the Canucks' zone, and Umberger quickly moved the puck to Lupul for a one-time shot that Sanford could not get with the glove.

Mike Knuble added a power play goal at 10:22, and Richards' 1st goal came at 16:46 on another slam dunk one timer play.

Lukas Kraijcek provided the Canucks' only other goal during the 2nd period.

Richards completed the night and created a summary of the Canucks' hardships at 14:09 of the 3rd with his 2nd goal of the game. The Flyers were in the midst of killing a 5-3 power play when Richards broke loose of the Canucks' rush and blew by going the other direction. A subtle deke gave Richards the 5-hole opening he was looking for and he didn't miss the chance.
