Sunrise, FL (Sports Network) - Antero Niittymaki posted his first shutout in nearly two years, and Derian Hatcher scored the only goal as the Philadelphia Flyers edged the Florida Panthers, 1-0, at BankAtlantic Center.
Niittymaki turned aside all 38 shots he faced, earning just his third career shutout and first since January 2, 2006 in a 1-0 win over Boston.
Hatcher registered his first goal in more than a month for the Flyers, who have won three straight games for the first time since a five-game streak from October 10-20. The Orange and Black also snapped a five-game skid against the Panthers, beating them for the first time since March 15, 2006.
Tomas Vokoun made 19 saves for Florida, which has now lost three of four. The Panthers were blanked at home for the first time since February 3 of last season, against Los Angeles.
The Flyers finally broke the scoreless deadlock 9:14 into the third, as Stefan Ruzicka came streaking along the left boards and sent a pass to Hatcher, who snuck in behind a defenseman and crashed the net, poking the disc past Vokoun.
Niittymaki was solid the rest of the way, making a pair of key stops in the final moments with Florida skating on the man-advantage.
The Panthers dominated the first period, with 14 shots on goal to Philadelphia's three. Florida had its best chance to grab the lead late in the stanza, but Niittymaki made a sliding save on Radek Dvorak's penalty shot, deflecting it with his right pad.
The game also remained scoreless through 40 minutes, though the Flyers got some pressure with an early power play. Both teams then engaged in end-to- end hockey the rest of the way, and Dvorak again had the best scoring chance, ripping a shot off the outside of the right post with 5:38 left.
Philadelphia had been outshot 26-11 heading to the third.
