TORONTO, ONT - It's a fact that it wasn't pretty. Unless, of course, you were watching Nitty.
Antero Niittymaki made a franchise regular season record 54 saves and made one amazing stop after another to carry the Philadelphia Flyers to a 3-2 win over the Toronto Maple Leafs on Saturday night at Air Canada Centre.
Niittymaki, who fills the backup role for the Flyers, has now allowed just 2 goals in the last 92 shots he has faced over his last two starts. Niittymaki shut out the Florida Panthers 1-0 on Dec. 30th.
Mike Richards provided the game winner for the Flyers on the power play with just 2:51 left on the game clock. Ian White was in the penalty box for a holding call when Richards put the Flyers up for good.
But the Flyers and their fans had to sweat it out through most of the 3rd period, as the Leafs largely dominated the play. Mats Sundin brought the Leafs back from a 2-0 deficit to tie the game with a pair of 3rd period goals, with the first coming at 4:09 of the period. The second goal followed about 3 minutes of almost constant pressure in the Flyers' defensive zone, and made it 2-2 at 11:48.
Maple Leafs goaltender Andrew Raycroft was met at the warmup with a chorus of boos from the hometown Toronto crowd, but still made 29 saves on 32 Philadelphia shots and maintained his winless streak that stretches back to November 9th.
Philadelphia forward Steve Downie, who served a 20 game suspension for a hit on Ottawa's Dean McAmmond in the preseason, got the scoring started for the Flyers in just his 4th NHL game, and 2nd since being recalled from the Philadelphia Phantoms.
Jeff Carter gave the Flyers a 2-0 lead with about 3 1/2 minutes remaining in the 1st on a 2-on-1 shorthanded rush.
Injuries became a major factor in the game, especially for the Flyers. Totonto defenseman Carlo Colaiacovo left the game in the 1st period with a knee injury, but the Flyers lost two forwards, Joffrey Lupul and Sami Kapanen. Lupul was caught with a hard open ice hit from teammate Derian Hatcher that was actually meant for Toronto's Alex Steen. Kapanen needed stitches after taking a puck to the eye in the 1st period.
Toronto's woes on the power play continued as they managed to score on just one of 6 opportunities, while the Flyers went 1 for 3 with the man-advantage and added Carter's shorthanded tally.
