New York, NY (Sports Network) - Scott Hartnell recorded the second hat trick of his career and Philadelphia overcame a two-goal first-period deficit to pummel the New York Rangers, 6-2, in an Atlantic Division clash at Madison Square Garden.

Mike Richards collected three assists, while Simon Gagne, Stefan Ruzicka and Mike Knuble also lit the lamp for the Flyers, who closed out their six-game road swing with a 5-1-0 mark.

Steve Downie and Danny Briere each recorded two helpers and Antero Niittymaki, making his third consecutive start, stopped 39-of-41 shots to earn the win.

Ryan Hollweg registered the first two-goal game of his career and Dan Girardi added two assists for New York, which remains winless in 2008 (0-4-1). Henrik Lundqvist allowed six goals on 30 shots in defeat.

Philadelphia scored three of their six unanswered goals in the second period to erase a 2-0 deficit and assume a one-goal lead after 40 minutes.

The Flyers opened the middle stanza with a 5-on-3 power play and took full advantage, cutting the deficit in half, 2-1, 40 seconds into the frame.

Briere fed the puck from the goal line to Richards at the top of the left circle, whose one-timer glanced off the stick of Mike Knuble perched at the front of the net.

Ruzicka tallied at the 8:45 mark, tying the game at two. Jim Dowd raced down the right wing to corral a dump-in and quickly threw the puck into the slot, where Ruzicka fired a wrister through Lundqvist.

The Flyers then pulled ahead when Hartnell's shot from the left corner beat a surprised Lundqvist less than two minutes later.

Philly made it a 4-2 game with a power-play tally in the early stages of the third period. Randy Jones kept the puck in along the boards at the left point, and Jeff Carter controlled the disc at the left circle. He tried to send a backhand pass to Hartnell in the slot, but the puck deflected high in the air. Hartnell, with Chris Drury in his face, then batted the puck on a bounce just under the crossbar.

Hartnell completed his natural hat trick at 8:49. Downie threaded a perfect long, lead pass that Hartnell caught up to between the circles. Hartnell faked the forehand before switching to the backhand and banking the puck off the right pad of Lundqvist, who was fooled on the play and sprawled on his stomach in the crease.

Gagne, who missed the last 26 games with a concussion, added a power-play marker with five minutes remaining to expand the Flyers' lead to 6-2.

Hollweg snapped a 67-game scoreless drought at 4:43 of the first when he pounced on a rebound at the right side of the cage.

He scored again nearly three minutes later when he went to the front of the net and deflected Girardi's shot from the right point. The puck then pinballed off the face of Flyers captain Jason Smith and the mask of Niittymaki before crossing the goal line.

Hollweg entered the game with only three goals in 172 career games.

Game Notes Philadelphia had a couple of other players return to lineup after being sidelined with injuries: Smith (four games with a leg issue) and Sami Kapanen (one game due to dental surgery). Scottie Upshall (ankle) was a coach's decision and did not play...The Rangers had taken four straight, seven of eight and eight of the last 10 encounters with the Flyers coming into play...The Flyers improved to 7-5-1 versus Atlantic Division opponents, while the Rangers fell to 10-5-0 against divisional foes...Philly went 2-for-7 on the power play, while the Rangers failed to score on their seven chances.
