Washington, DC (Sports Network) - Mike Knuble scored twice and Kimmo Timonen had a goal and two assists, as the Philadelphia Flyers defeated the Washington Capitals, 6-4, at Verizon Center.

Jim Dowd, R.J. Umberger and Mike Richards also tallied for the Flyers, who rebounded from a 4-3 overtime loss to the Boston Bruins on Saturday afternoon. Philadelphia has won four of their last five contests.

Martin Biron stopped 28-of-32 shots for the Flyers.

Alex Ovechkin, Michael Nylander and Mike Green each had a goal and an assist apiece for Washington, which had a brief two-game winning streak halted. Alexander Semin chipped in with a goal for the Caps.

Olaf Kolzig stopped only 12-of-16 shots before being replaced by Brent Johnson in the early stages of the second period. Johnson was solid, making 15 saves.

With the Flyers clinging to a 4-3 lead after two periods, Philly got a little insurance 8:23 into the third. Steve Downie's shot from in close was stopped by Johnson, but the rebound came to Richards, who shoveled it past the Caps' netminder to give the Flyers a two-goal cushion.

Nylander made it a 5-4 game when he lit the lamp with 6:51 left in regulation and the Capitals continued to put the pressure on the rest of the way. However, with the goaltender pulled in favor of the extra attacker in the last minute of play, Washington was unable to sustain any significant pressure in the Flyers' defensive zone and Timonen's empty net tally with 38 ticks left accounted for the 6-4 final score.

"I think there was a lot of try there but we made too many mistakes," Capitals head coach Bruce Boudreau said. "We talk about it, we look at it, we work on it. In our zone we talk about turnovers. I think they got every goal off turnovers."

Washington wasted little time getting on the board as Semin lit the lamp 1:22 into the opening stanza. Nylander controlled the puck in the right wing corner and found Semin streaking toward the net. His quick wrist shot from the right circle beat Biron, giving the Capitals the early advantage.

Knuble knotted the contest at 1 with 11:15 remaining in the period. Jeff Carter brought the puck down the right wing boards, then dropped a pass to Knuble, who took a wrist shot that was partially stopped by Kolzig, but the disc trickled across the goal line to tie the score.

Knuble's second goal of the contest, a power-play tally with 4:31 left in the first gave the Flyers a 2-1 lead.

"They came out a rested team, and they came out pretty good and overwhelmed us there a little bit in the beginning," Knuble said. "We got two big goals and ended the first with the lead."

The Flyers added two more in the early stages of the second frame, one while skating shorthanded. With Jason Smith in the box serving an instigation minor following his fight with Matt Bradley, Dowd chopped a rebound home from in close and 59 seconds later Umberger's blast from the top of the right circle handcuffed Kolzig, making it a 4-1 game 6:08 into the period. Kolzig was then pulled in favor of Johnson.

Washington got one back when Green scored 24 ticks later. The Caps then made it a 4-3 game when Ovechkin ripped a wrist shot past Biron from the top of the right wing circle with 8:50 left in the second.
