<title>Flyers Sign Randy Jones To New 2 Year Deal</title>
<description>Amidst all the action of UFA Day, the Flyers were relatively quiet. No big splashes. Certainly none with the impact of last year's signings of Danny Briere, Scott Hartnell, Kimmo Timonen, and the Smith/Lupul/Pitkanen trade.

But along with the 4 smaller UFA signings, Flyer GM Paul Holmgren also sured up the blueline further by resigning defenseman Randy Jones to a new 2 year deal worth $5.5 million.

<title>Flyers sign Metropolit, Vaananen</title>
<description>Philadelphia, PA (Sports Network) - The Philadelphia Flyers continued to make depth moves on Tuesday, signing unrestricted free agents Glen Metropolit and Ossi Vaananen.

Metropolit was inked to a two-year deal, while Vaananen was signed for one year.

The 34-year-old Metropolit posted 11 goals along with career-highs in assists (22) and points (33) for the Boston Bruins a year ago.

This will be the sixth club in the energetic winger's eight-year NHL career, which has seen stints with the Capitals, Lightning, Thrashers and Blues. He also spent two seasons in Finland and one in Switzerland from 2003-06 before returning to North America two years ago.

A 27-year-old stay-at-home defenseman, Vaananen spent last season playing in the Swedish Elite League. Prior to that, he played six seasons in the NHL with Phoenix and Colorado, registering 12 goals, 57 points and 460 penalty minutes in 430 contests.

In other roster additions, the club signed forward Nate Raduns to a one-year contract and defenseman Sean Curry to a two-year contract. Both players spent 2007-08 in the American Hockey League.

<title>Flyers Sign D Steve Eminger</title>
<description>Philadelphia, PA (Sports Network) - The Philadelphia Flyers signed defenseman Steve Eminger to a one-year contract Sunday.

Eminger was acquired by Philadelphia along with a 2008 third-round pick from the Washington Capitals on June 20 for a first-round pick in the 2008 draft.

"Steve is a young two-way defenseman that will fit in nicely with our group," said Flyers general manager Paul Holmgren.

The 24-year-old collected only two assists in 20 regular-season games for Washington last season. He added a goal during the Caps' seven-game Eastern conference quarterfinal loss to Philly.

"I'm happy to get the deal worked out and excited about being part of the organization," Eminger said. "I can't wait for the start of the season to get things going."

A former first-round pick of the Caps (12th overall) in 2002, Eminger has posted six goals and 43 points in 212 career games over parts of five years, all with Washington.

The signing is the latest in a spate of moves the club has undertaken to add depth to the defensive corps, with the health of Derian Hatcher and Mike Rathje in question, along with the expected departure of unrestricted free agent backliner Jason Smith.

<title>Flyers ink C Carter to multi-year deal</title>
<description>Philadelphia, PA (Sports Network) - Days before Jeff Carter was set to become a restricted free agent, the center agreed to a new, multi-year contract with the Philadelphia Flyers, general manager Paul Holmgren announced Friday. Per club policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed.

TSN Canada is reporting that it is a three-year deal worth $15 million.

"Jeff is a terrific young player who has come up through our organization and we believe that he is only going to get better," said Holmgren. "It is a priority for us to keep our core of young players intact and signing Jeff allows us to do that."

Carter played in 82 games last season, notching 29 goals and 24 assists, all career-highs. The 23-year-old added six goals and 11 points in the postseason and helped Philadelphia reach the Eastern Conference finals for the first time since 2004.

"I'm very excited to be staying in Philadelphia," said Carter. "We have great group of guys on this team and I can't wait to get back on the ice and continue where we left off last season."

The Flyers selected the London, Ontario native with the 11th overall pick in the 2003 NHL Entry Draft, and he has 66 goals and 132 points in 225 career games.

<title>Shootout Win Over Rangers Moves Flyers Into 7th</title>
<description>Philadelphia, PA (Sports Network) - Mike Richards scored the deciding goal in the shootout, as the Philadelphia Flyers snapped a seven-game home losing streak against the New York Rangers with a 4-3 victory.

After Brendan Shanahan's backhand offering went wide of the net, Jeff Carter lifted a backhander high over the blocker of Valiquette. Martin Biron then stopped Nigel Dawes' shot with the left pad and the bottom of the catching glove to secure the win.

Danny Briere scored twice for the Flyers, who defeated the Rangers at the Wachovia Center for the first time since April 15, 2006. Richards also scored in regulation and Vinny Prospal added two assists, while Biron made 23 saves.

With the win, Philadelphia leapt over idle Boston for sole possession of the seventh spot in the Eastern Conference.

<title>Flyers Hold Off Late Charge To Sweep Thrashers</title>
<description>Philadelphia, PA (Sports Network) - Vinny Prospal scored the game-winning goal in the third period and Antero Niittymaki's 17th and final save of the game was also his most important, as the Philadelphia Flyers defeated the Atlanta Thrashers, 3-2, at the Wachovia Center.

Mike Richards and Jeff Carter also scored and Niittymaki earned a victory for the first time in six weeks for the Flyers, who halted a four-game winless skid and beat Atlanta for the 10th consecutive time. Philadelphia maintained its hold on the eighth and final playoff seed in the Eastern Conference with 82 points. Niittymaki made a right pad save on a blast by Ilya Kovalchuk from the low slot with one second remaining in regulation to preserve the win.

<title>Crosby-less Pens Still Manage to Embarrass Flyers</title>
<description>Pittsburgh, PA (Sports Network) - Petr Sykora and Evgeni Malkin each tallied two goals and two assists, as the Pittsburgh Penguins ripped the Philadelphia Flyers, 7-1, at Mellon Arena.

<title>Philly Gets Prospal for Picard and a Pick</title>
<description>Vaclav Prospal is coming home.

After spending parts of the last 11 seasons floating around the NHL, "Vinnie" is returning to the team that drafted him back in 1993.

In a deadline deal that Flyers' GM Paul Holmgren made to sure up his forward corps after a rash of devastating injuries, the Flyers have sent defenseman Alexandre Picard to the Tampa Bay Lightning, along with a conditional 2nd or 3rd round pick in 2009.

<title>Briere and Flyers Finally Win in Dramatic Fashion</title>
<description>Buffalo, NY (Sports Network) - Danny Briere netted the deciding shootout tally against his former team, as Philadelphia stormed back from a three-goal deficit to down Buffalo, 4-3, snapping a 10-game losing streak.

The Flyers entered the game shorthanded and on the brink of a new franchise low -- no team since the club's inception had ever dropped 11 in a row. Going down 3-0 and operating without the likes of Mike Richards (hamstring), Simon Gagne (concussion) and Joffrey Lupul (ankle), they appeared poised to set the new mark.

<title>Flyers' Richards out three weeks with hamstring injury</title>
<description>Philadelphia, PA (Sports Network) - Philadelphia Flyers forward Mike Richards will miss three weeks with a hamstring injury suffered in the team's 2-1 overtime loss to Florida on Saturday.

Richards, playing in his 200th NHL game, tangled awkwardly with Florida's Jay Bouwmeester while heading toward the Panthers' net in the third period. His legs were splayed out as he went down on the ice, and crashed into the boards.

Richards, the Flyers' leading scorer, skated off the ice and didn't return. Richards has 23 goals and 43 assists this season.

<title>Flyers' Gagne hopes to return after suffering concussion</title>
<description>Philadelphia, PA (Sports Network) - Philadelphia Flyers forward Simon Gagne hopes to return this season despite suffering his third concussion of the season in Sunday's 4-3 loss versus the Pittsburgh Penguins.

The 27-year-old Gagne, who didn't play the final two periods against the Pens, missed 26 games earlier this season with dizziness after taking a hit from Florida's Jay Bouwmeester on October 24.

"I don't think the season is lost right now," Gagne said Monday after being examined by team physician Dr. Gary Dorshimer. "Hopefully, I'm not going to have any more symptoms coming up. The way I feel right now is just a balance problem. When this goes away, I will be pretty much symptom free."

Gagne, the 22nd overall selection in the 1998 draft, has seven goals and 11 assists in 25 games this season.

"The only thing I can say right now is that I don't think it is that bad," Gagne added. "I know the symptoms were definitely worse the last time. Hopefully I will feel better very soon. The doctor said I could feel very good in the next couple of days. I just have to take it one day at a time and see what happens.

"Right now it is one day at a time. It could be a couple of days, it could be a week or it could be longer. There is no timeframe on what is going on right now."

<title>Getting Back on Track</title>
<description>The Flyers are starting off 2008 on the right foot. After going winless in 6 games right before Christmas break, they are back on track and winning games, and scoring goals. So what has come of our Flyers as of late? Well, obviously it's a combination of things. Lines are clicking, our goalies are playing solid and the defense is playing well.

<title>Flyers and head coach Stevens agree to extension</title>
<description>Philadelphia, PA (Sports Network) - The Philadelphia Flyers and head coach John Stevens have agreed to a one-year contract extension worth a reported $650,000.

Stevens is currently in his first full season behind the bench of the Flyers and has guided the club to a 16-14-3 record.

"John has built strong relationships with many of our young players as well as with the players that joined us over the summer," said general manager Paul Holmgren. "We believe that he is the right coach to lead our team in a positive direction."

Stevens, who briefly served as an assistant coach for the Flyers before being promoted, took over as head coach last year following the firing of Ken Hitchcock early last season.

"Obviously, I am very excited," said Stevens. "I have a great relationship with Paul Holmgren and I am thrilled with the opportunity to continue to work with Mr. Snider and Peter Luukko. They have the team going in a real positive direction. They have a long history of winning here and I am excited to be a part of that moving forward."

Stevens was the head coach for the Flyers' AHL affiliate -- the Philadelphia Phantoms -- for six seasons (2000-06), compiling a 230-181-33-25 record to go along with 29 playoff wins and a Calder Cup championship in 2005.

It was the second victory for the Flyers in Raleigh in a week, and their 3rd win over a division leader in that same span.
